The Illinois Sports Wagering Act was passed into law on
June 28, 2019 with the first legal wager being placed on
licensed by the state. However, this is already receiving pushback from Senator Bill Coleman whose bill is still active. In addition, the senator pointed out that the bill is likely to be opposed by tribal interests as the governor “asks the tribes to give up their online share of sports gaming, which nationally accounts for 95 per cent of total revenues."
In Alabama the House Economic Development and Tourism Committee approved a gambling proposal, which would allow voters to decide on legalising a lottery, casinos, and sports betting in the November election. Te constitutional amendment would

give Alabamians their first vote on the issue since 1999 if it is allowed to go forward. Te proposed constitutional amendment encompasses up to 10 casino sites, a state lottery, and land-based and online sports betting.
While sports betting is yet to be regulated in these states other states have been much quicker out of the gate meaning that their gambling markets have already evolved. New Jersey became the second state, behind Delaware, to legalise sports betting after PASPA was overturned. Internet gambling and sports betting set new records in New Jersey in November. New
Jersey’s casino and sports betting operators and their online partners won nearly $5.8bn in 2023, setting a new record.
