Page 43 Metcal Launches Series of Handpieces for CV Systems

Cypress, CA — Metcal has released seven new handpieces to complement its Connection Validation™ (CV) sol- dering system. These ergonomic

handpieces transform the CV system into a complete soldering solution for a wide variety of applications. CV evaluates the quality of the

solder joint and provides closed-loop feedback to the operator. This sys- temic and objective approach delivers repeatability and measurable stan- dardization to the soldering process. When the CV system was first

introduced, it came with Metcal’s ad- vanced CV handpiece. Hundreds of solder tip cartridges were available for most standard soldering applica- tions with the original handpiece. Now, with the release of seven new handpieces, the CV soldering rework

system is a solution for even the most challenging soldering applications. Handpieces include: an ultra-

fine handpiece for use on delicate components; an ultra-fine tweezer handpiece for more versatility with microcomponents, which is excellent for working under a microscope; a precision tweezer handpiece, which turns the CV into a rework system for applications that require the re- moval of surface mount components as small as 0.04 x 0.04 in. (1 x 1 mm); a desolder handpiece for use with through-hole components; a high thermal demand handpiece, which provides a boost in performance by

effectively delivering thermal energy to demanding loads; and two solder wire feeder handpieces. All of the new handpieces are

now available with a number of spe- cialized tip cartridge geometries. The tip cartridges are available in a vari- ety of temperature series to satisfy

the most challenging applications. Contact: Metcal, a division of

Rethink Adds Grippers for Sawyer Cobot

Boston, MA — Rethink Robotics has added to the capabilities of its collab- orative robot (cobot), Sawyer, with an extended portfolio of gripper solu- tions. The company’s patented ClickSmart technology enables end- of-arm tooling to be changed in sec- onds, integrating the end effectors of numerous manufacturers, such as SCHUNK, Schamlz, Piab, Gimatic, Zimmer Group, and OnRobot. The heart of the technology is

the ClickSmart gripper plate, whose integrated sensors automatically rec-

ognize and remember the configura- tion of the gripper. As soon as a grip- per tool is mounted on the robot arm, Sawyer recognizes the required con- figuration and can operate the tool. One of the biggest challenges in

the use of collaborative robots is the change of end effectors, which must be precisely selected for each applica- tion. The gripper can be controlled directly by Sawyer’s powerful Intera software platform. With the expan- sion of the ClickSmart gripper port- folio, Sawyer can be used for numer- ous applications in various indus- tries — from packaging and logistics to electronics production, metal pro- cessing and the plastics industry — with a single “click” and without sig-

nificant downtime. Contact: Rethink Robotics, Inc.,

Why vacuum? – Reliable, reproducible solder joints

Void-free (cavity-free) soldering with unleaded solders is an impor- tant requirement for the manufacture of power electronics. However, lower void rates can only be achieved with soldering processes where the molten solder is subjected to a vacuum.
