Nikon Metrology Delivers 1,000th X-ray Source

Brighton, MI — Since 1987, Nikon Metrology’s Tring, U.K., factory has produced 1,000 Xi 160 kV X-ray sources with an internal X-ray gener- ator for use in the company’s XT V systems, as well as the XT H X-ray and CT machines. The latest Xi source has been

incorporated into an XT V 160 elec- tronics inspection system that is sup- porting quality assurance of power semiconductor device production at IXYS UK Westcode, in Chippenham, U.K. The X-ray inspection machine is being used to check whether the re- flowed solder that attaches integrat- ed circuits to contact pads on the di- rect copper bonded substrate boards is continuous, with a controlled level of voiding. The Xi source is completely in-

tegrated into the machine, eliminat- ing the need for a traditional high- voltage cable to connect the X-ray generator to the source. This lowers maintenance costs, since these cables are prone to failure and need regular maintenance. The X-ray source has an open-tube design, which allows the electron beam-producing fila- ment to be replaced easily during the year.

A sealed tube may last for a cou-

ple of years, but can stop working without warning. The manufacturer

then has to renew the tube, which costs thousands of dollars, while the machine is down for days at a time. “What I like about the Nikon

system is the easy access to the large stage, which allows me to place sev- eral large components on it at the

ing the image on the screen is rapid.” The Xi source allows high-reso-

lution to be maintained at high pow- ers, which is necessary for IXYS to penetrate a thick layer of aluminum and evaluate solder quality. The soft- ware is designed to be user-friendly, and automatically works out the per- centage of voids in the solder, which is required to ensure that the product
