R&S and Löhnert Intro End-of-Line Automotive Test System
Columbia, MD — Löhnert has inte- grated Rohde & Schwarz’ QAR imag- ing tester into its new end-of-line test benches for automotive radomes. The test benches can test the reflection and transmission of these sensor cov- ers over their entire surface at cycle rates under 10 seconds. Löhnert Elektronik, a specialist
in custom test benches, was looking for a reliable automotive radome tester for its new test bench and chose the R&S QAR quality automotive radome tester. Reportedly, the R&S QAR is the only tester on the market that can test these radomes quickly and over their full surface area. Automotive radomes are protec-
tive covers for vehicle radar sensors. They must have good and uniform transmission characteristics over their entire surface for radar signals in the 77 and 79 GHz bands (E band). Otherwise, angle errors and distor- tions can occur and the maximum detection distance can be reduced. Conventional test solutions for
production lines are based on meas- uring only a few points using a radar reference sensor and with reflectors attached to the cover. It is not possi- ble to measure the uniformity of the entire surface with this approach. The R&S QAR quality automo-
tive radome tester is based on dis- tributed planar arrays of transmis- sion and reception antennas operat- ing in the E band. The system per- forms spatially resolved reflection measurements, allowing reliable evaluation of radome performance within seconds. The user can see at a glance whether the material has any defects. The mmWave images repro- ducibly show how much of the radar signal is reflected by the radome and how much is transmitted unhindered
through the radome (transmissivity). Löhnert Elektronik has already
launched the first test bench with the automotive radome tester. The rotary indexing machine contains different type-specific holders for the objects under test (component nests) and two test stations for transmission and reflection reference measurements.

The machine is driven by the Löhnert instant scripting RunTime (LisRT V3) software together with a Siemens SPC controller. The radomes can be placed in the test holders either man- ually or by a robot. The system identi- fies them by a barcode or a data matrix code (DMC). Normalization of the test equip-
ment is possible directly on the line. This is done using the test stations with their test plates. The measure- ment accuracy and function can also be verified on the line without recon- figuration. The test bench can easily be adapted to new radomes and spec-
ifications. Contact: Rohde & Schwarz USA, Inc., 6821 Benjamin Franklin Drive,

Siemens Expands Fast Package Program in U.S.
Washington D.C. — Siemens is now offering its popular Sinumerik 828D CNC system through its new Fast Package program. To offer a fast solution to U.S.-based machine tool builders, system integrators and retrofitters, the company is stocking typical system pack- ages that include the most fre- quently used Sinumerik 828D CNC, Sinamics drive, Simotics motor, and accessories, such as cables, from its Elk Grove Village, Illinois, facility. The program is designed to deliver these packages within 10 days. Additional benefits of
ordering the predefined pack- ages include a price discount, a simplified ordering process and shortened lead time. The pro- gram is subject to availability and delivery time will depend upon the stock available at the facility in Illinois. Only customers located in the U.S. with a physical mailing and delivery address are eligible for the program. The company is bringing the
Sinumerik 828D to a highly competi- tive price point in the U.S. market.
The machine is a compact, panel- based CNC that offers machine tool builders very flexible machine design integration. End customers will ben- efit from the company’s intuitive and
