Consistent High Quality through AOI Inspection

ing and inspecting to the highest standard, it can be certain that every product leaving the factory is more than fit for the purpose. That determined commitment to quality,
combined with a total focus on delivering on its promises, has allowed the company to grow and thrive in the competitive contract manufacturing space in southern California. “Our differentiator is that we do what we say
we’re going to do,” says Amanda Brewer, executive vice president of Veris Manufacturing. “So, when we tell a customer or a vendor that something is going to happen, we do everything we can, and we will jump through hoops if needed to ensure that it does indeed happen for them.” Much of what Veris does is advanced manu-
facturing, for industries that include aviation, mil- itary, medical and space — markets with mission- critical products and high standards. Veris is ITAR-approved and has the highest quality certifi- cation, NADCAP Electronics. It is also certified to AS9100 and ISO 13485. The company builds to the tight tolerances of IPC Class 3 and inspects to Class 3 or Class 2, depending on the customer re- quirements. “When boards are really easy, anybody could

level of expertise to be able to build them.” Selecting an AOI Solution Veris had used 2D inspection for some time
and had started to run into some real restrictions, particularly around measuring solder fillets and solder volume. With the 3D system that Veris
chose, the Koh Young Zenith 2, it can accurately measure devices. “False calls had been a big problem with the
2D machine. We had to go through all these calls manually, one at a time, to make sure that it was actually a defect,” says Vargha Samima, quality engineering manager at Veris Manufacturing. “Now, the number of false calls has fallen substan- tially. We’re now able to control our process better. We can tighten up the tolerances to get better re- sults.”
When looking for an AOI solution, Samima’s
key factors were to: resolve excessive false calls; gain insight into solder fillets and volume; mini- mize programming time; reduce production cycle time; and have user-friendly software. It was important to him to have a system that
was right for the company and delivered on their technical needs, while also providing a great oper- ator experience. After all, these are the people pro- gramming and running the system on a daily ba- sis. Their confidence in the system is essential to its successful deployment.
