thin — only a few micrometers thick,” says Shanshan Yao, co-author of the paper and a former postdoctor- al researcher at NC State, who is now on faculty at Stony Brook Uni- versity. “This allows for better con- tact with the skin, giving the elec- tronics a better signal-to-noise ratio. “And, gas permeability of wear-

able electronics is important for more than just comfort,” Yao says. “If a wearable device is not gas perme- able, it can also cause skin irrita- tion.” To demonstrate the material’s potential for use in wearable elec- tronics, the researchers developed and tested prototypes for two repre- sentative applications. The first prototype consisted of

skin-mountable, dry electrodes for use as electrophysiologic sensors. These have multiple potential appli- cations, such as measuring electro- cardiography (ECG) and electromyo- graphy (EMG) signals. “These sensors were able to

record signals with excellent quality, on par with commercially available

electrodes,” Zhu says. The second prototype demon-

strated textile-integrated touch sens- ing for human-machine interfaces (HMIs). The authors used a wearable textile sleeve integrated with the porous electrodes to play computer games, such as Tetris. “If we want to develop wearable

sensors or user interfaces that can be worn for a significant period of time, we need gas-permeable electronic materials,” Zhu says. “So this is a significant step forward.” Web: www.news.ncsu.edu r

Nordson DAGE Earns Queen’s Award for Enterprise

Aylesbury, UK — DAGE Products, part of Nordson ELECTRONICS SO- LUTIONS, is one of 220 organiza- tions in the U.K. to have been recog- nized with a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise. The company was recognized for its excellence in international trade. Over the past three years, the

company has grown its overseas sales by more than 50 percent, with profits increasing nearly 150 percent. Its ongoing commitment to research and development, via its dedicated R&D facility in Colchester, U.K., has enabled it to design and manufacture

Assemble Batteries with High Power & High Storage Capacities

Advanced solutions for Electric Vehicles, Charging Stations, & Energy Storage Systems

Sonobond’s ultrasonic metal welders quickly and reliably weld up to 100 layers of anode and cathode foils – as thin as seven microns – to battery tabs and terminals, without tearing! They also easily weld the large wire bundles and HV terminals required for high power and high storage capacity batteries.

Using our patented Wedge-Reed System – with no external heat, current or fi llers – our

units create strong, solid-state, highly conductive welds, elimi- nating metallurgical defects such as porosity and intermetallics that commonly exist in fusion welds.

This System welds tinned and oxidized metals – a unique ability unmatched by any other ultrasonic system – as well as stranded copper wire bundles up to 100 sq.mm cross section.

world-class, bond test and X-ray in- spection systems to meet the ever-in- creasing technological demands of its customers in the PCB assembly and semiconductor electronics sectors. “We are proud to win this award

as a recognition of our growth and success in providing the best test and inspection solution to our cus- tomers,” says Mani Ahmadi, general manager of DAGE. “It is a testament to our employees in the U.K. and all around the world.” Now in its 54th year, the Queen’s

Award for Enterprise is among the most prestigious business awards in the U.K., with winning businesses able to use the Queen’s Awards em- blem for the next five years. Contact: Nordson DAGE, 2370
