Laritech Partners with ASM Assembly Systems for Solid Performance

he company really did launch in my garage,” says Bill Larrick, Laritech, Inc., president and founder, explaining
how the ODM got its start. “Designing products was far more interesting than my day job in sales, so I’d come home after work and design cool new electronics. The business just grew from there.” Bill left his sales position in 1999, bought a
pick-and-place system, set up shop in his garage and hired Joel Butler, now Laritech VP of manufacturing. “I soon didn’t have enough time to engineer and manufacture products myself, so Joel joined me and managed pro- duction while I focused on design.” Since then, Moorpark, California-based Laritech has gone from one placement machine in a parking spot to a five-line, 77,000 ft2 (7,153.5m2) ODM business with over $23 million in revenue. While much of Laritech’s business is in
the high-reliability markets of medical and military, the company’s reputation for figur- ing out how to engineer and build challeng- ing systems has also landed the team some well-known consumer product clients. “We helped design and launch the Bird scooter boards,” says Terry Gonzales, VP of opera- tions and sales at Laritech, noting that the fast turnaround on the scooter project is par for the course. “We started the design in September and were in production in late
October. That’s pretty much how we roll around here; we help customers launch products quickly.” Managing the company’s burgeoning business
means investing in the right personnel and optimal equipment sets, which Laritech has mastered. Over 100 employees with an average tenure of five years work at the ODM, which prides itself on building sol- id, service-oriented teams that get things done with creativity and fun. “Since 2006 when we started
counting, we have helped companies launch almost 500 products,” Joel Butler proudly explains. “From scooters to 4K virtual reality cameras to disposable endoscopes to high-end defense systems, we’ve got quite a resume. And, for anyone that’s ever tried to launch a product and knows how difficult that process can be, I’m sure they will appreciate the sig- nificance of our track record.” The Laritech design teams work in concert with production, ensuring that products are designed for manufacturability. “We don’t shy away from any project,” says Terry, pointing out that the minimum order is one board. “In fact, we had a customer say to us once, ‘you can tell us no,’ but we never do. We love coming up with creative solutions, taking on difficult products and then engi- neering the most efficient ways to build them.” As a case-in-point, Laritech recently engineered a design and process for a long, thin, flexible board with a four-pin BGA im- age sensor on the end that fits into a 0.04 in. (1.0 mm) tube for a disposable medical product. Not an easy feat.
