50 New cGMP-Compatible Cell and Gene Therapy Manufacturing Portfolio Launched

Thermo Fisher Scientifi c announces the launch of an industry-leading product, compliance and services portfolio, compatible with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and designed to enable rapid start-up of clinical and commercial cell and gene therapy manufacturing.

Developed as the fi rst-ever all-inclusive solution to simplify and optimise the cGMP equipment installation and validation process, the Thermo Scientifi c Cell Therapy Systems (CTS) Series Laboratory Equipment are comprised of a comprehensive range of key laboratory equipment routinely used in cell and gene therapy manufacturing, including biological safety cabinets, centrifuges and CO2

includes a factory acceptance test documentation package comprised of operating certifi cates, performance specifi cations, user guides and technical manuals. The portfolio is also supported by high quality fi eld compliance services, including installation setup, IQ, OQ and other support such as temperature mapping and calibration.

“Cell and gene therapy manufacturers are under increasing pressure to deliver new life-saving therapies, while challenged with complex manufacturing processes and the associated compliance requirements,” said Hugh Tansey, Senior Director, Innovation and Growth Programs for Laboratory Equipment at Thermo Fisher Scientifi c. “In support of cGMP, the CTS Series Laboratory Equipment have been developed to address some of the challenges our customers face every day so they can focus on what matters the most - using science to save patient lives.”

The CTS Series Laboratory Equipment are manufactured at ISO13485-certifi ed sites and designed to meet global mechanical and electrical safety standards. The portfolio is available for sale in more than 150 countries and is supported by an extensive global service network of subject matter specialists.

How to Rapidly Scale Up Liquid Handling in Diagnostic Labs

Safe and Effi cient Concentration of Low Volume Samples

BioChromato Inc reports how the Department of Bioimaging Information Analysis at Gunma University is benefi ting from the ability of its Smart Evaporator C1 to safely and effi ciently concentrate low volume samples. The Department of Bioimaging Information Analysis, Gunma University has been using PET (Positron Emission Tomography) to assist its pioneering use of bioimaging techniques to develop in vivo verifi cation methods for radioisotope labelled candidate pharmaceutical compounds.

The COVID-19 crisis has led to unparalleled pressure on labs to ramp up capacity for SARS-CoV-2 testing. Integra’s electronic pipettes, pipetting robots and other instruments have helped many labs tackle this challenge of increasing testing capacity while, at the same time, enhancing the reproducibility of results.

VOYAGER adjustable tip spacing pipettes are ideal for transferring patient samples from individual collection tubes - either blood collection or swab tubes - to microplates in serological and PCR testing workfl ows. Automatic adjustment of tip spacing at the touch of a button allows fast, simultaneous reformatting of up to 12 samples between different labware types. This can be fully automated by combining the VOYAGER pipette with the ASSIST PLUS pipetting robot, further streamlining an array of routine pipetting tasks, such as tube to plate reformatting.

The VIAFLO 96/384 handheld electronic pipette is an ideal option for boosting throughput when adding buffers or samples to 96 or 384 wells in parallel - for example, during nucleic acid extraction - and is perfect for a range of common methods, including magnetic bead purifi cation protocols and silica-based vacuum extraction kits.

As the pandemic has progressed, there has been a growing need for serology tests to analyse the immune responses of individual patients, as well as to assess population immunity. The VACUSIP portable aspiration system can be used for safe and convenient liquid waste removal during these immunoassays, which often involve a number of aspiration steps to remove buffers after incubation and washing.

Integra’s portfolio of products is perfect for laboratories that have had to adjust their workfl ows to meet urgent COVID-19 demands, requiring rapid implementation and scale-up of new and existing processes. This crisis has been an extreme demonstration of the versatility of Integra A products.

Dr Hirofumi Hanaoka, Associate Professor in the Department of Bioimaging Information Analysis commented: “My group is working to develop novel radioisotope labelled drugs for diagnosis, as well as for treatment. After preparing our RI-labelled compounds using HPLC, samples are concentrated in order to remove the organic solvent. After this, evaluation tests are carried out by administering the product to mice. Historically to do this we used rotary evaporators or nitrogen blowdown methods, but because the concentration volume was very small we always had to transfer samples from glass tubes to other containers in order to concentrate. To improve this time consuming process we purchased a Smart Evaporator from BioChromato. Now sample transfers have become unnecessary and the risk of losing sample in this process has been eliminated. Using our Smart Evaporator - concentration can be done in any container, we can evaporate the sample in the containers that we use down to 200 microlitres then directly inject into mice with a syringe. This process can now be fi nished in about 2 hours, and we can plan to complete concentration by the end of our lunch break, which has made things much easier.”

Drawing upon BioChromato’s patented spiral plug evaporation technology, the compact, benchtop Smart Evaporator C1 offers fast and effective evaporation in tubes or vials without solvent bumping thereby eliminating risk of sample loss, cross contamination and saving researchers time. Proven to be the ideal lab tool for simple removal of most solvents, the C1 also excels at safe drying temperature sensitive compounds and effi cient evaporation of small volume samples.

Flagship Square Chambered Autoclave Range Showcased at Analytica Virtual

Astell Scientifi c attended the inaugural Analytica Virtual with their fl agship square chambered AVS series. “The AVS was a great conversation starter for us, as many of its features are available on our cylindrically-chambered benchtop and top-loading models. We even got into discussions about our high-volume liquid Effl uent Decontamination Systems via steam-based heat sterilisation. Thanks to everyone who came to chat with us,” said Astell’s Sales and Marketing Director, Paul Birchmore.

The AVS demonstrates all the features available in the Astell range. A truly versatile and customisable autoclave series, the AVS can autoclave anything steam-sterilisable, subject to it fi tting into the 1200L chamber. With the option of a shaft driven, gas-sealed cooling fan actually inside the square-section chamber aiding the water-cooling jacket, the AVS can drop the temperature of tricky-to-cool objects fast - 70% faster than with an external fan alone. This can signifi cantly increase throughput and productivity.
