43 Clinical, Medical & Diagnostic Products First 13-colour Flow Cytometer for the Clinical Laboratory Introduced
Beckman Coulter Life Sciences has introduced the DxFLEX, Europe’s first CE-IVD, 13-colour clinical flow cytometry system. The sensitivity and resolution of the DxFLEX expands laboratory testing capabilities, especially those focusing on user-defined assays.
As well as being marketed in Europe, the DxFLEX will be available in countries that accept the CE mark as the basis for their country-specific registration. It has already been introduced successfully into China, India and Japan.
The DxFLEX uses avalanche photodiode (APD) technology, which creates a highly sensitive semiconductor electronic device able to convert light to electricity. This addresses the limitations of traditional PMT–based flow cytometers. Beckman Coulter Life Sciences first harnessed the use of fibre optics in their flagship research flow cytometry system, the CytoFLEX. The use of APD technology transforms the way a compact flow cytometry instrument can deliver high content research analysis.
“The DxFLEX flow cytometer opens up the possibilities for large hospitals and commercial laboratories looking to expand their high content analysis work with a compact, easy to use system,” said Dr Mario Koksch, Vice President and General Manager of Beckman Coulter Life Sciences Cytometry Business Unit.
The APD technology in the DxFLEX reduces compensation spillover compared to PMT-based cytometers, delivering greater confidence in results, streamlining the lab’s workflow and reducing manual steps. Running compensation on a conventional, photomultiplier tube (PMT) flow cytometer involves significant hands-on time, even when features like auto-compensation setup are available in the software.
“The biggest challenge for user-defined testing, particularly when using 10 or more fluorescent parameters, is the compensation process and the burden it places on lab staff. The time it can take may hold back the overall competitiveness of the lab,” explained Dr Koksch. “However, incorrect compensation is one of the main reasons for false results when running multi-colour flow cytometry panels in the clinical lab.”
The DxFLEX comes with ready-to-use QC beads and is available in four configurations, from a one-laser/five-colour system to a three-laser/13-colour configuration. An optional autoloader, with a 32-position MCL carousel and an adapter for 96-wellplates, can be added to each configuration. The flow cytometer is also supplied with a dongle which makes it easy for the lab to upgrade the system. The dongle simply switches on additional lasers or detectors for more complex configurations.

Novel Molecular Transport Media for Dual COVID-19 and Infl uenza Sampling Introduced
EKF Diagnostics announces that it has added a novel viral transport media for the safe sample handling and testing of multiple infectious diseases from a single swab to its product range. PrimeStore® MTM (Molecular Transport Medium) is an FDA cleared and CE IVD marked sample collection device which deactivates viruses, including COVID-19, flu A, flu B, HIV and TB. Already proven in the US market, this fully patented device ensures transportation and workplace safety for disease testing programmes, greatly reducing risk of infection to health workers, couriers, and lab technicians.
Designed and optimised for molecular testing, PrimeStore MTM is a unique FDA class 2 cleared sample collection and transportation device that effectively kills viral and bacterial pathogens whilst preserving and stabilising the released DNA and RNA. The molecular transport media supports many downstream molecular applications, including qPCR and next generation sequencing. The sample can be safely stored at ambient temperature for up to 7 days and re-used several times. As well as reducing the risks of handling live pathogenic samples, this also cuts costs by eliminating cold chain requirement and need for Category 3 facilities, as testing can take place outside of containment.
As multiple tests can be processed from one sample swab, this makes it ideal for the approaching flu season since samples stored in PrimeStore MTM can be tested for both COVID-19 and influenza from a single sample that has been inactivated and stabilised. This can assist with disease differentiation at reduced costs.
PrimeStore MTM is proven technology with millions of tubes already sold globally during and prior to the COVID-19 pandemic to hospitals and laboratories who trust that it provides safer and more reliable testing than traditional VTM or universal transport media, saline, or RUO devices.
Multiple peer-reviewed scientific papers have been published from 2011 onwards, validating the use of PrimeStore MTM for reliable pathogen detection from a wide variety of clinical matrices and biofluid types, and with a range of analytical platforms. A selection of these references are available on the EKF website.

New Monoclonal Antibodies to Clostridia GDH
Clostridium difficile associated diarrhoea (CDAD) is the leading cause of nosocomial diarrhoea. The spread of this bacterium is difficult to control due to its resistant spores that survive on many surfaces. Thus rapid detection is crucial to its control. Most rapid tests target the toxins (A & B) produced during the infection.
Another diagnostic target is glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), an enzyme produced and released during bacterial
growth. Studies have shown that adding GDH detection together with toxin detection by EIA or PCR significantly improves assay specificity.
ViroStat announces the release of new monoclonal antibody pairs to Clostridia GDH validated by ELISA. These antibodies represent a new set of tools for rapid detection development.
