Fibre Adaptor Improves Optical Input of Spectrum Analysers
LABORATORY PRODUCTS
Tips, Tubes and Plates for the Purest Results
Laboratory consumables from Eppendorf offer superior standards in three important areas: purity levels, the absence of additives which could influence assay results, and minimised sample-to-surface binding. Meeting the needs of scientists using tips, tubes and plates for routine assays or specialised work with sensitive samples, Eppendorf’s material selection and production processes follow the highest quality standards.
Eppendorf consumables are manufactured only from virgin polypropylene certified free of plasticisers, biocides or other unwanted additives, which could leach into buffers and solvents, leading to false positive or false negative results in bioassays. The material also complies with the FDA requirements for olefin polymers.
A new adaptor for use with the Yokogawa AQ6370 Series of optical spectrum analysers (OSAs) is designed to enhance the sensitivity, dynamic range and level stability by reducing the divergence of light emitted from the input fibre and increasing the input signal to the OSA by 5 dB.
The light that is emitted from an optical fibre is divergent, and under normal conditions the limited size of the optics inside the OSA monochromator results in divergent light being blocked, and hence unable to contribute to a strong optical signal.
Using the new fibre NA adaptor on a GI50/125 multi-mode fibre results in the fibre’s numerical aperture (NA) value being divided by two. The reduction in divergence of the optical input increases the monochromator optical throughput, producing a 5 dB (factor 3) increase in signal strength.
The result of this enhancement in performance is better dynamic range in passive component testing and better level stability in active device testing.
The Yokogawa AQ6370 Series of optical spectrum analysers offer the world’s ‘best in class’ optical performance combined with excellent functionality and operability for applications including R&D and production testing of optical devices and transmission systems.
Covering the wavelength range from 350 to 2400nm and applicable to both single-mode and multimode fibres, the AQ6370 Series provides unprecedented optical performance, including high wavelength accuracy of ±0.01nm, high wavelength resolution of 0.02nm, ultra-high dynamic range of 78 dB (typical), wide level range of -90 dBm, and fast sweep speed of 0.2 sec/100nm.

ECO Heating and Cooling Thermostats
With the new ECO Lauda is continuing the amazing success story of the predecessor equipment series, the Lauda Ecoline. Both control heads, designated ECO Silver and ECO Gold, have a powerful circulating pump and are equipped with a mini-USB interface as standard.
Another innovation is the practical allocation of a flow-rate switch at the front of the control head. This means that individual adjustment of the flow between internal and external circulation is possible even during operation.
Since the beginning of 2011, the Lauda ECO thermostats are also available with natural refrigerants. Compared with the fluorocarbons usually used, natural refrigerants have a far lower global warming potential.
To protect the climate, users can therefore contribute to the reduction of the direct greenhouse effect.
Outwardly, the thermostats do not differ from the devices with conventional refrigerants. Even the performance data are identical.

Heathrow Scientific announces the release of the Small-2-Tall™ Rack to expand on their already broad line of test tube holders. Heathrow Scientific has created this innovative rack to simplify work and reduce clutter. Where other racks can obstruct the reading of short 50mm tube labels; the Small-2-Tall Rack makes it ideal to view 50mm labels at a glance. Its two removable tiers make the Small-2-Tall Rack unique. The top tier can be easily removed to allow for easy viewing of shorter tubes. When larger tubes up to 150 mm are needed, the second tier can be added for additional stability and confidence. The Small- 2-Tall Rack is like getting two racks in one.
The Product Development team at Heathrow Scientific felt there was a great need for the Small-2-Tall Rack. Mic Jensen from Product Development explained: “Almost all other racks cover labels on shorter tubes, which can make it really difficult to read which sample goes where. We looked to solve that problem while maintaining a balance between stability and easy use. We believe we have done that with the Small-2-Tall Rack’s removable tiers.”
Furthermore, a great feature about the Small-2-Tall Rack is its storing system. When not in use, the second tier conveniently snaps in and nests under the base for secure storage to prevent the loss of removable tiers.

any application. Batch-specific purity certificates can be downloaded from the Eppendorf website. Eppendorf LoBind®
Demanding applications, such as forensic DNA testing or next generation sequencing sample preparation, require careful selection of consumables, which will not adversely affect the quality of analytical results. Eppendorf is committed to developing products which eliminate contamination, deliver reliable assay results, and maximise sample recovery. The company’s tips, tubes and plates therefore provide a cost-effective way of ensuring the highest possible reproducibility, accuracy and precision.

New Test for Faster Screening of CRE, Including NDM-1
Thermo Fisher Scientific recently launched Oxoid Brilliance™ CRE Agar, a medium for faster and easier detection of carbapenem- resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). It is recognised that the only way to stop the spread of infections by resistant bacteria, such as CRE, is to rapidly identify and isolate any hospital patients who are infected with the resistant strain. Laboratories can use Brilliance CRE Agar to screen patient samples for CRE and provide clinicians with results in just 18-24 hours. This faster time to result accelerates the start of infection control measures, including accurate antibiotic prescription, for better patient outcomes.
Brilliance CRE Agar is easier to use and read than the Hodge test traditionally used to detect resistance to carbapenems. Brilliance CRE Agar contains a modified carbapenem, at levels recommended by both the CLSI and EUCAST, ensuring reliable detection of numerous CRE strains, including those with the NDM-1 mechanism of resistance. Chromogenic compounds in the medium differentiate between resistant E. coli (pink colonies) and Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Serratia or Citrobacter (KESC) organisms (blue colonies). The colonies of other resistant organisms appear white and are easy to spot against the novel pigmented agar.
