Revolutionary Advancement in Jet Fuel Thermal Oxidation Testing
Heating Blocks Chosen for New Anticancer Medicinal Chemistry Lab
Asynt’s versatile and cost-effective DrySyn heating blocks have been selected to equip an important new medicinal chemistry laboratory for the Northern Institute for Cancer Research (NICR) at Newcastle University. Medicinal chemistry is an integral component in anticancer drug discovery and development. Opened by Dr Andy Takle, Director of Translational Research at Cancer Research UK, the Newcastle Cancer Centre Medicinal Chemistry Laboratory provides valuable additional space for the NICR Drug Discovery and Imaging Research Group. This group aims to help discover and develop targeted therapies for all types of human cancer – adult and paediatric, solid and haematological.
DrySyn MULTI meets the needs of medicinal chemists in the new NICR lab for a way to rapidly heat 12 small-scale reactions, control temperature and agitate simultaneously. The DrySyn Parallel Synthesis Kit provides a convenient, low-cost solution for chemists conducting simple synthetic reactions with temperature control and magnetic stirring, but without the complications of reflux or inerting. It is ideal for producing small, focused libraries of compounds and can also be upgraded to a parallel reaction station for standard round-bottom flasks by using the appropriate DrySyn MULTI inserts.
PAC announces the introduction of the Alcor Intelligent Heater Tube™ (IHT), an innovative and revolutionary advancement in traceability and security for jet fuel thermal oxidation testing. The IHT securely stores the important data associated with jet fuel thermal oxidation test in a small Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) device permanently mounted on the end of the Alcor Heater Tube. This keeps tube and results data together inseparably, facilitating traceability and ensuring accuracy.
Jet fuel thermal oxidation tests (JFTOT® quality of jet fuels. With JFTOT®
) are critical for determining the it is crucial to have testing materials
meeting strict dimensions and composition controls. Alcor by PAC, has delivered this high level of quality and reliability for more than thirty years. Alcor heater tubes provide superior performance and produce reliable results, but until now, archiving data meant keeping heater tubes and data separately. Quality audits require matching data with heater tubes. Audits can turn up mismatched data due to poor record keeping or simple transcription errors. The IHT now enables simplification of record keeping, improves traceability, and minimises audit headaches. The Alcor Intelligent Heater Tube™ is the only heater tube on the market that can electronically store all the important data from JFTOT®
heater tube. With the IHT Reader-Writer, a unique electronic identification device, the IHT provides detailed traceability of tests and easy access to stored data. Data can be transferred from the JFTOT®
based application. Circle no. 72
According to Roger Griffin, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at Newcastle University: “Our chemists like using the DrySyn range, which provides them with a safe and reliable method of heating their reactions, avoiding the need for messy and dangerous oil baths. The compact DrySyn MULTI is particularly useful, as multiple reactions can be carried out on a single stirrer hotplate, saving space and increasing efficiency. Also, the modular system enables us to mix and match inserts to use a variety of flasks and vials at the same time, making them extremely flexible. In addition to the safety, convenience and versatility of the standard DrySyn range, the ability to have inserts custom-made to fit reaction vessels for your own application means these products are essential equipment in our labs.”
Made of chemically resistant, 100% recyclable aluminium, DrySyn heating blocks offer excellent heating performance up to 300ºC and can heat a reaction flask 25% faster than an oil bath. Other advantages include a small footprint and shallow well shape, which increases reaction visibility and minimises the possibility of glass fractures.

New Atmosphere System
Microgen Bioproducts is releasing a new system for preparing defined atmospheres (anaerobic, micro- aerophilic and CO2), for the incubation and storage of bacteriological cultures, without the need for anaerobic jars and expensive catalysers, large expensive anaerobic cabinets and dedicated CO2 incubators.
The MAS (Microgen Atmosphere System) creates defined atmospheres in special application bags, which can then be incubated or stored under normal aerobic conditions. The incubation of the application bags in standard aerobic incubators provides savings in the space required for the incubation of bulky anaerobic jars and significant savings in laboratory space when compared to dedicated anaerobic cabinets. MAS instantaneously achieves the defined atmosphere within the application bags only consuming sufficient gas to fill the bag, whilst improving isolation rates and colony size .
The savings on gas consumption and incubator space are complemented by the ease-of-use offered by the LCD programme panel, low maintenance and the extensive application list, to create a unique, cost-effective and flexible atmosphere generation.

Microbiological Benchtop Incubators Available Globally
Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc announced that its new Thermo Scientific Heratherm microbiological incubators are now available in 230V for the global market. The incubators are available in three models: General Protocol, Advanced Protocol and Advanced Protocol Security.
Each unit is available in 60-, 100- and 180 litre sizes and combines superior sample protection, ease of use, efficiency and an inner glass door that maintains temperature uniformity. The user-friendly units feature a small footprint, making them stackable without the use of tools, an easy-to-clean rounded interior and an intuitive display. In addition, a compact 18 litre model incorporates Peltier technology to provide temperature conditions around or below ambient for space-restricted labs.
With a stainless steel interior, the Heratherm® General Protocol incubators use gravity convection to provide superior
temperature uniformity, ranging from 5°C above ambient to 75°C. A unique airflow design, advanced microprocessor control and an automatic over temperature alarm ensure that an optimal temperature environment is maintained. Operating from 5°C above ambient to 105°C, the Heratherm Advanced Protocol incubators are equipped with unique, dual convection. This new technology allows flexible fan speed settings from 0 to 100% for application versatility. The digital timer provides weekly, hourly or real-time on/off cycles.
Heratherm Advanced Protocol Security incubators incorporate an over and under temperature alarm, as well as a lockable, alarmed door. The independently certified 140°C decontamination cycle provides additional peace of mind. An optional stainless steel exterior provides the clinical look and feel desired by pharmaceutical and clinical laboratories.
