Friday May 4 2012 NEWS The Times Table Mountain is Tops
Cape Town landmark confirmed as a wonder of the world
It's official! Table Mountain is one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. The good news was announced yesterday in Cape Town by the mayor, Patricia de Lille. The New 7 Wonders Foundation, based in Switzerland, called on people from around the
world to vote for 28 finalists, which included Mt Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, and the Grand Canyon, in the US. "Hundreds of millions of votes" were cast and had to be counted. The process took over three years. De Lille said the city will start planning an inaugural event for later this year. A
commemorative plaque is to be presented to Cape Town by the foundation. "Table Mountain is unique among the Seven Wonders in that it is in the heart of the city.
The others are a distance away from the main centre. Table Mountain is a marvel of history, geology and bio-diversity - it even has a stellar constellation named after it," said De Lille proudly. She thanked all those who voted for Table Mountain. Table Mountain, Halong Bay, in Vietnam, the Iguazu Falls, in Brazil and Argentina, Jeju
Island, in South Korea, and the Puerto Princesa underground river, in The Philippines, have all been given Seven Wonders status. Komodo Island, in Indonesia, and the Amazon rain forest have provisional status until vote verification is concluded. Gary de Kock, of SANParks, said: "This award recognizes the value of investment in the
natural heritage of this beautiful mountain chain, and that conservation adds value to the tourism economy."
