Gift of the gab CHAPTER 2
CHAPTER OVERVIEW
Talking, communicating and interaction are all part of our lives. Whether we have to face the various voices and messages of advertisers in advertisements trying to convince us to buy or use something or whether we are engaged with one another in dialogue. Learners have to learn to deal with these messages, the content and the sub-texts. Interwoven with listening to and talking about texts related to advertising and dialogues, is of course the use of language and structures. How rich is language so that we can use a variety of sentence structures and synonyms and antonyms to enrich our messages to the world and to one another. Practise makes perfect!

Place reading material related to advertising in the classroom book corner. Collect brochures, flyers and advertisements from community newspapers and place these in flip files for learners to page through. Encourage learners to spend time reading some of this material quietly on their own. This would give learners more exposure to the kind of language used in persuasive writing. Learners can read when they have completed their activities for the day. Encourage learners to classify or categorise them in different ways: products target audience medium (print, radio, TV etc.)
Integration Advertising (persuasive texts) can be linked to a subject like Economic and Management Sciences where learners deal with consumer issues. The vocabulary extension that this provides can support their writing in EMS. The influence of advertisements on our lifestyle can also be linked to Life Orientation.
Inclusivity Obesity is an issue that will be raised in the advertisements and leaflets discussed in this sub-theme. Be sensitive about learners who might be overweight and obese. No learner should mock another learner about this. Try to optimise this learning opportunity to rather focus on the benefits of making healthy choices.
