LES INFOS ❘ REGIONS REGIONAL NEWS

From new attractions to special events, we look at the latest in culture and tourism across La Belle France

News in brief ROW YOUR BOAT

Pont-Audemer is inviting visitors to tour the town by kayak. The medieval Norman town is criss-crossed by canals as a

result of its history of tanning, and the trip will take you past

old tanning houses, pretty stone bridges and an historic pier. www.lescastorsrislois.fr

CAFÉ CULTURE Meilhan-sur-Garonne is the first

of 24 villages to receive money to open a café under a new scheme

to regenerate rural areas and fight social exclusion. Groupe SOS has put aside €200,000 for the project

and hopes to eventually open 1,000 cafés. Its president, Jean-Marc

Borello, said, “The village café was once a central meeting place for

inhabitants, but it has disappeared.” www.groupe-sos.org

National treasure

It’s not every day that a new national park is created − in fact it took more than 10 years for the new Parc National des Forêts en Champagne et Bourgogne to become the 11th of France’s national parks. Covering the Trois Forêts and the Langres plateau, it straddles two historical regions –

Burgundy and Champagne-Ardennes – and is dedicated to the forest and its inhabitants. Its 240,000 hectares include 50 million trees, 100 marsh areas, 700km of rivers and 2,000km of footpaths, not to mention four Cistercian abbeys and several châteaux. Well worth a visit, we’d say.  www.forets-champagne-bourgogne.fr

PC PLASTIC Kervadail, a country lane in Morbihan, has two new gendarmes on patrol – made from plastic. The helmeted bikers, installed by the mayor, sit in wait near a telephone pole, ready to spook speeding motorists into slowing down.
