73rd WMEA State Music Conference
ELEMENTARY Sessions MONDAY January 20, 2020
8:15 – 9:15 AM Responsive Teaching and Orff- Schulwerk Dr. Paul Cribari Choir Room
In this session, participants will look at how we incorporate student ideas to create musical experiences that are unique to the class. These musical experiences will reflect the specific character of the individual and the classroom community. Through these activities, students will take greater ownership in the process and see themselves as central to the musical experience that reflects their racial, cultural, and communal identities.
9:30 – 10:30 AM Keynote Address The NAfME Value Proposition: a Wise Investment Chris Woodside Auditorium
See page 57 for complete description.
10:45 – 11:45 AM Bridging the Gap Joan Davies Choir Room
Joan keeps you moving and demonstrates classroom-tested strategies to
teach
students how music comes together. Simple to understand, easy to apply! Rapid “repetition with variation” (Syfr Teacher and Leader Institute) engaging students for increased retention using only 5-7 minutes per class starting with the basics of steady beat, creating an “ensemble effect,” then moving to rhythms. Relate musical notation to language, make smooth transitions from syllables to numbers counting, and combine rhythmic and pitch skills to create melodies. New material for some. New perspective for others. For the love of music, happy students, and stable musical performances. Notes provided; questions encouraged. Please bring your own recorder.
1:15 – 2:15 PM Teaching Pieces from the Music for Children Volumes Dr. Paul Cribari Choir Room
In this session, participants will see multiple approaches to breaking down and teaching pieces from the Orff Schulwerk Volumes. Along the way, time will be devoted to looking at how teachers might deviate from the original models and incorporate new ideas that honor the intent of the original pieces.
2:30 – 3:30 PM Functional Harmony in the General Music Classroom Dr. Paul Cribari Choir Room
In this session, participants will examine ways to introduce functional harmony to children in the upper elementary (grades 4-6). Examples will include popular music, elemental pieces, folk music, and music that incorporates asymmetrical meter. Discussions will include ways in which to develop the workshop models with other forms of music, and alternative instrumentation.
3:45 – 4:55 PM Elementary/Middle Choral Reading Session
Stephanie Zukowski Choir Room
The Elementary Reading Session will focus on repertoire appropriate for elementary, treble, and SAB middle school ensembles. The session will be diverse in genre and geared towards providing educators with a great resource to choose classroom and concert material.

8:15 – 9:15 AM Improvisation as a Means for Teaching Beginning Recorder Dr. Paul Cribari Choir Room This session will look at how basic melodic contours can be used to teach beginning recorder, to reinforce literacy skills, and to develop artistry from the beginning. These improvisation activities will then lead to ensemble work that includes traditional melodies and accompaniments suitable for children in grades 3-6.
9:30 – 10:30 AM Putting it all Together with a Story Dr. Paul Cribari Choir Room
Using a folk tale as a starting point, participants will see how simple pieces of music might be developed to become a stage performance. Musical examples will span grades 1-5.

1:15 – 2:15 PM Musart: Collaborating with the Art Teacher
Jessica Hodges Choir Room We found ourselves in an interesting scheduling dilemma last school year and were able to agree on a unique compromise. The art teacher and I would see every student in our school on Fridays for 30 minutes to teach a collaborative lesson, which we dubbed “Musart.” Throughout the year, we created many worthwhile lessons and projects focusing on color, movement, pitch, composition, and so many other art and music concepts. Many of our lessons also included a technology component that can be done either with one-to-one devices or a SmartBoard. Effective lessons using Specdrums, Chrome Music Lab, Boomwhackers, children’s books, and movement props. Attendees will get the opportunity to use the technology and other materials and learn in a hands-on environment.
