the word “if” for “when.” Interactions with peers, professionals, mentoring, are all hugely important factors in developing an environment where students are in it for the long haul. We’ll discuss some strategies that have helped me hold on to students beyond beginning band and orchestra and increase enrollment both in my own programs as well as into high school and beyond.

8:15 – 9:15 AM The Basics of Vocal Technique and Warm-ups for Choir Camille Blackburn Room 25 It’s tough to present vocal technique in a practical and sequential manner for choir students, especially if you are a band director, teaching choir. This session will give both band and choir directors some simple ideas for improving their choirs’ tone quality, musicality, and expression. Also, in this session you will learn a variety of physical and vocal warm ups to prepare the mind, body, and voice for a rehearsal that’s pedagogically sound and full of energy.

Sight-reading is one of the most important music literacy skills we can teach our singers. Learn an easy-to-implement, sequential method for incorporating melodic sight-reading development into your daily rehearsal. These activities can provide a basis for beginning sight-reading training or supplement techniques already utilized at any level.

2:30 – 3:30 PM Help! There’s a Gender Gap in My Choir Camille Blackburn Room 25 What is really needed and what does it mean for the choir to be “balanced”? It might be very different than you would guess. Come and explore what can be accomplished when you think outside the box. Learn how to make musical choices to fit your singers and how to “voice/tune” the choir to bring out their best blend.
3:45 – 4:55 PM Working with the Choral Accompanist: Leave the Mystery Behind Bobby Pace Room 25
One of the most important factors in the success of a choir is the communication and relationship between the conductor and pianist. Any breakdown in this can cause unneeded losses of valuable time during rehearsal. This session aims to de- mystify the needs and wants of a choral accompanist. Topics to be discussed will include: 1) How much time in advance to supply music to the pianist; 2) What types of notes and information to supply before the first rehearsal to the pianist; 3) Specific words and language to use during rehearsal when addressing the pianist; 4) “The Jump” from playing parts to accompaniment: when is the right time?; 5) Piano solo preludes, interludes, and introductions: to conduct or not to conduct?; and, 6) An examination of specific musical examples.
