Contributed by Dr. Holly Dalrymple Vocal Arts Coordinator, Choral Music Education
This year, Wyoming celebrates 150 years
of Women’s Suffrage - On
December 10, 1869, the first woman cast her vote in Laramie, Wyoming. As part of the state’s celebration, University of Wyoming Bel Canto Women’s Chorus and UW composer Dr. Anne Guzzo have collaborated on an original composition to honor and commemorate the celebration. Guzzo’s SSAA piece, “Circle Light,”
of will be featured in the
WyomingPBS documentary, State of Equality. Bel Canto will perform the piece live as part of the first public screening of the film on Tuesday, December 10th, 7:00 PM, in the Cheyenne Civic Center. The text is by Ann McCutchan and captures the spirit of women working together, living side by side, moving towards equality: “We are all bound up together – Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Friends … Circle of Women, Circle of Light, singing what fair, singing what’s right.”
Tickets to the WyomingPBS screening are free but need to be reserved through the Cheyenne Civic Center. More information about state Suffrage celebration events can be found on the Wyoming Travel website:
