BAND Sessions MONDAY January 20, 2020


8:15 – 9:15 AM Band Interest Session Aric Hageman Band Room In this session, we will discuss band topics in the state of Wyoming including issues relevant to marching band as well as the All-State Band.


9:30 – 10:30 AM Keynote Address The NAfME Value Proposition: a Wise Investment Chris Woodside Auditorium NAfME COO Chris Woodside will explore the many facets and benefits of your joint NAfME/WMEA membership. Advocacy support and policy efforts, professional development opportunities, networking, student participation, and publications are amongst the topics that Chris will cover during this in-depth exploration of your NAfME benefits. Being a part of NAfME/ WMEA means being a member of a community of music educators that spans the country and beyond. 10:45 – 11:45 AM Creating Self-Sufficient Musicians Dr. Myra Rhode Band Room


This clinic will provide strategies to aid in constructing a plan for the development of music independence in student musicians. Strategies presented will assist with creating expectations, being deliberate with choices, and establishing daily routines that can also be used by students outside of the classroom.


1:15 – 2:15 PM It’s All Fun & Games in the Band Room Brian Redmond and Sarah Hanson Band Room Join Sarah Hanson from Kelly Walsh High School in Casper and Brian Redmond from Rock Springs High School as they share their methods of using games to inspire, motivate, and challenge their students. The session will include hand-outs, rules, and advice on how to incorporate game structures into your classroom to achieve any goal.


2:30 – 3:30 PM Visit the Exhibits!


3:45 – 4:55 PM Wholistic Rhythm - Cut the Learning Curve 50-90% Kevin Fuhrman . Band Room What if you didn’t have to answer, “How does it go?” each time you hand out new music? The music featured for this session will include movie sound-tracks, patriotic music, and maybe even some novelty numbers that sound great and still provide excellent educational value for your bands. Dr. Belser will conduct, and all session attendees are encouraged to bring your horn to make music together while we explore literature in a genre that can be quite challenging to find quality.
