Regional Round-Up Northeast District President Ryan Whipple

Greetings! Like many schools around the great state of Wyoming, the music programs in the Northeast District hit the ground running, some before the first official day of school. From marching band camps and competitions, audition preparations for All-State and other honors ensembles, honor clinic selection, practice and performances, along with rehearsals for our upcoming concerts, students and teachers alike are putting in extra hours to make great things happen.

Our Northeast district just completed the 2019 Junior High Honor Band and Choir Clinic in Hulett. There was a ton of fun to be had at this event. Watching these 7th and 8th grade students bring the notes on the page to life was an absolute blast. The amazement that sparkles in their eyes when they first sit down in their chairs is a sight that is second to none. It is fantastic to see students many whom come from smaller programs be able to contribute to an ensemble much larger than they would have the opportunity to participate in at their home schools.

The choir was directed by one of our former Northeast colleagues, Marie (Dickey) Ammann and was accompanied by Kimbrie Garcia. They performed four wonderful songs, which included special teacher accompaniment. Their final number, “This is Why We Sing,” by Greg Gilpin, included the choir directors singing the descant.

The band was directed by Aemalemalo Seui. The band worked extremely hard during the day also performed four pieces. Robert Sheldon’s “The Monster Under the Bed,” was a student and audience favorite. This piece included at least fifty sound tubes being swung by members of the band. This effort took quite a lot of practice to avoid hitting each other.

Many of our schools are currently hard at work preparing for Fall concerts, Veteran’s Day programs and various winter concerts. We hope that the season treats everyone well and look forward to seeing everyone in Gillette this January.
