MOTORING

We Remember: Don Booker MBE

A shining light has gone out here in South Yorkshire at the sad passing of the iconic Barnsley legend, our motoring mogul Don Booker MBE, who died in September at the age of 87.

While many will remember the name Don Booker from his days as celebrated Barnsley Chronicle editor, a company that he dedicated over 65 years of his life to, others will have enjoyed reading his wit-filled anecdotes that bejewelled his popular motoring editorials in Aroundtown over the years.

And it is these pages that will never be the same again. Don became more than just a colleague to us; both him and his wife Freda were like our extended family. He fully supported every

decision we made at Aroundtown and backed us to the hilt. He was a true gentleman and will certainly be a hard act to follow. So, it is only right that we give him a true Aroundtown send off with a brief look-back at his celebrated life - a life in which critical success, an address book filled with notable friends, endless transport trips and philanthropic projects carved such fulfilment for Don.

Born in 1931 in Dodworth, Don was a welcome present to his mother Ada as he was born on

her birthday. His father, Harry, was a specialist breeder of Old English Game Bantams and was known locally as the Hen Doctor, opening up feeble birds on the family’s kitchen table before stitching them back together again.

The family moved to the Old Mill area of Monk Bretton parish when Don was three; a village that he remained in ever since and which began his passion for wheels. As a boy, many a summer was spent with his Uncle
