If you’re expecting visitors this Christmas – and even if you’re not – it’s a time of year that inevitably calls for a good deal of extra elbow grease when it comes to getting your home spick, span and sparkling clean.
Don’t be daunted by the scale of the task, make a plan, roll up your sleeves and, most importantly, find some little helpers. As with any grand plan, a To Do list is always a good starting point. Take a look around your home and focus on the places that need the most care and attention, especially those that visitors and guests will use and see the most.

Don’t worry about a cluttered understairs cupboard or a brimming box room that no one will spot but focus instead of the main living and dining areas, bedrooms and kitchen, especially if you’re the one preparing this year’s festive feast. Do any carpets need a deep clean? Do your curtains or rarely used guest duvets want washing? If so, start with the biggest jobs first and organise them well in advance. Book a carpet cleaning firm or hire a DIY machine, take your duvets and curtains to the local dry cleaners and enjoy the satisfaction of crossing each chore off your list. Tackling the more manageable jobs around the home is where your little helpers come in. If your happy little team respond better to bribery than friendly persuasion, be sure to have some treats to hand to keep them on side. Get them on board to pull out the furniture and vacuum behind it, think beds, bookcases and sofas. Delve into those nooks and crannies that don’t usually feature in your day-to-day cleaning routine. Dust down your blinds and wipe doorframes and skirtings. Smarten up bathrooms and ensuites by cleaning tiles and mirrors to make them streak-free, wash bathmats to fluff them up and add new colour co-ordinated towels if your budget will stretch.
Defrost the freezer and give your fridge a thorough clean and clearout ready for your big Christmas shop. Check sell by dates and discard anything that’s been lurking for a while. Follow it up with the serious business of cleaning the oven, a must-do at this time of year. Dig out your Christmas crockery and glassware and run them through the rinse cycle of the dishwasher if you’ve got one. Finally, dot some pot pourri, cinnamon sticks or pine cones around to create an enticing festive aroma in each room. Then sit back, breathe a sign of relief and know that you won’t have to dirty your hands quite so much again until next year.
