It’s that same predictable question that crops up every year as surely as corny jokes in a Christmas cracker, what do you buy the person who has everything?


One of the region’s much-loved stately homes, Wentworth Woodhouse, may well have the perfect answer with a novel idea that could solve your gift-buying problems and help restore the Grade I listed building to grandeur at the same time. The imposing country house has launched its Make Your Mark in History appeal to raise £250,000 for the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, chaired by local businesswoman Julie Kenny.


Inspired by historic graffiti discovered on roof beams and leadwork left by former craftsmen, people are being offered the chance to follow in their footsteps and continue a centuries-old tradition. For a minimum recommended donation of £50 you can personalise a slate with a handprint, message or company logo. The finished product will be laid over the State Rooms on the East Front of the property and may well be discovered one day by future generations.
