HEALTH & BEAUTY

Stay happy & healthy whatever the weather

Your Christmas preparations are in full swing, the gift list is under control, food plans are coming together, your Christmas party outfit just about fits and your in-laws have got their orders to be on their best behaviour. What could possibly go wrong? The one thing you can’t control - a sudden dose of ill health.

We’ve all been there, working our socks off to prepare for fun and merriment when a nasty cold, stomach upset or some other unpleasant ailment strikes without warning putting all our plans at risk of falling as flat as a pancake. So what can you do to ward off the dreaded lurgy? Keep slugging back a medicinal dram and hope for the best or take some simple common sense steps to lessen your chances of succumbing to a minor but miserable malady? Of course, as a responsible adult you have to do the latter, with maybe just a spot of the former thrown in for good measure when you’re fighting fit.

According to those wise people at the NHS, keeping your immune system in tip-top condition is the best way to avoid catching a cold. Forget those old wives’ tales about not going outdoors with wet hair and avoiding exercise, instead increase your intake of milk and dairy products such as cheese, yoghurt and fromage frais which are all great sources of protein, calcium and vitamins A and B12. Start your day with a hearty breakfast. What better excuse than a frosty morning to eat a warm bowl of porridge packed with minerals and vitamins? Throw in some sliced fruit or a handful of berries and you’ll

be well on your way to hitting your five a day target.

Continue as you mean to go on during the day and up your portions of juicy citrus fruits or winter root vegetables that can be mashed, roasted or used in warming soups. Be sure to chew slowly and savour each mouthful to minimise the chances of an unwanted gift of heartburn or indigestion. Finally, don’t be tempted to use the cold weather as an excuse for staying snuggled up under the duvet or lounging on the sofa, wrap up warm, drag yourself outdoors and persuade your family to join you if you can manage it. Try a

brisk walk, a spot of ice-skating or even take a bat, ball or frisbee to the local park and pretend it’s still summer. People might think you’re one plum short of a Christmas pud but you’ll be boosting your immune system and doing your bit to keep your family happy and harmonious – another essential ingredient of a healthy Christmas!
