CHRISTMAS FAMILY FAMILY

Designer picked

to light the beacon of hope

The November night skies will be illuminated when 1,000 beacons across the country are lit at precisely 7pm on the 11th day of the 11th month in a poignant ceremony to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

And in Hoyland a specially commissioned beacon will be lit by designer Alex Dodson of Burned by Design – thanks to readers of Aroundtown

magazine who voted unanimously for him to do the honours after he created and handcrafted the eye-catching beacon. Alex’s design was commissioned after a

crowdfunding appeal by volunteers at Owd Martha’s Yard and features the name of the community garden based there.

Crowds of people are expected to join Alex at Owd Martha’s yard shortly before 7pm for the lighting ceremony which will be followed by a celebration at Belmont Working Men’s Club.

residential care, Christmas can also be a time of sadness, separation and loneliness as they are apart from long-distance family members or remember lost spouses. To keep the family festive spirit alive, staff at The Porterbrook Care Home in Sheffield, which offers residential, dementia and respite care, have organised a bumper calendar of Christmas events to make this season a special one for all their residents. With the smell of mince pies, sound of tinkering jingle bells and visions of green, red and gold, Christmas brings with it a sense of nostalgia and reoccurring traditions from the years gone by. To reminisce about Christmases growing up or those from the days of raising their own families, The Porterbrook staff will be hosting their annual festive party where residents can share fond memories over a glass of mulled wine and some traditional festive tunes played by a local saxophonist. For those with dementia, reliving these happy memories can help improve cognitive function, while boosting morale for those who may be spending their first Christmas in care.

One of the biggest family traditions for many of the residents may have been going to the pantomime – oh yes, it was. This year, The Porterbrook will welcome

Carousel Theatre back for another year with a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk specifically written for residential homes which includes over 40 costume changes to keep residents engaged. Not just about family, Christmas is also brimming with community spirit and to maintain these vital links the staff have invited various groups to visit The Porterbrook.

Along with the pupils from

Lydgate School who will be giving a special carol concert, bell ringers from a local church will also be stopping by this December to share the magic of the church bells. In a fully-interactive session, residents can try their hand at bell ringing and learn more about the history of the church bells. As it is the season of goodwill,

The Porterbrook are also helping the church to raise money for a new roof. Like one big happy family, care staff and residents alike will come together this Christmas at The Porterbrook as they form new relationships and make new memories for a real homely Christmas.
