Serving up a community asset
Pubs and post offices have long been thought of as two of the mainstays of community life but not every area can hang on to them.
In one South Yorkshire market
town, community action is coming to the fore where residents are hoping to swap post for pints to address the need for a first-class community hub. Penistone Community Alehouse
is the ambitious plan by locals to create a community-owned micropub – potentially the first in England – on the site of the High Street Post Office which will be included in the scheme to
protect its future. If approved, the alehouse
will be a very different kind of pub - one that’s owned by the community and used for their benefit however they see fit. In traditional style, it will sell
real ale, craft beers, gin and hearty snacks but with the added twist of doubling up as a meeting space for some of the town’s community groups, essentially serving as a versatile hub for all.

As an added bonus, it would
be run as a Community Benefit Society meaning profits will be reinvested into Penistone to bring the community together and hopefully reduce social isolation – which few things do better than pub, meeting places and post offices. Spearheaded by local resident,
Marc Cooling, the project has been promoted at some local key events including Penistone Gala, Penistone Agricultural Show and the Tour de Yorkshire where it received an encouragingly great response and organisers are determined to build on the momentum. “Negotiations will continue
with the building’s landlord and a full planning application will be submitted to Barnsley Council,” says Marc. “The project would be funded through a Community
Share Offer which is planned to go live in the New Year and the alehouse could be open by late spring, if plans go without a hitch.” Consultation and crowdfunding
are now the next stages of the process and resident can log on to the Penistone Community Alehouse website to give the project their stamp of approval – and the more who respond, the merrier. Crowdfunding will launch
in early 2019 and those buying shares in the community pub will get a say in how the social enterprise venture is run. For now, it’s people’s views
that matter most so don’t miss the chance to take the survey and make your view count.
