We are going to be knee deep in delicious food this month with the Food Festival setting up its marquees and tempting us with all the lovely samples.


F


ood makes a wonderful gift for any occasion. I am sure most people hosting a dinner party would rather receive an unusual bottle of olive oil or


chocolates than flowers - or is that just me?! The food festival is a great time to catch up with who


is producing what locally. There is a diet, and by diet I mean lifestyle plan - not slimming, based on eating as much locally produced product as you can find. Macrobiotic is an eating plan formed from the ideas


about types of foods drawn from Zen Buddhism. The basic rules are to reduce all animal based foods, eat locally grown foods in the right season and have smaller meals. You are discouraged from eating


dairy, eggs, poultry, sugars and, in a bizarre twist, a selected list of vegetables including no asparagus... then add in no spices, no soda, coffee or alcohol and only drink when thirsty. I always believed that if you drank when you were thirsty you were already dehydrat- ed. Regularly sipping water throughout the day would be my approach but hang on, there is more to learn! The food groups


recommended and their amounts are as follows: eat 40% - 60% whole grains, 5% - 10% pulses and legumes, 25% - 30% vegetables and 5% seaweed. Those of us in Dartmouth may have to forego the seaweed part unless we nip down to the shore and collect it our- selves.


Not only do


you have a list of food to follow you also have to con- sider your utensils. Only wood or glass is allowed with no metals and never use an electric oven. As the chaps in Dragons Den say, ‘I’m out.’ The parts of this philosophy/eating plan that I do


want to follow are: eat more vegetables, chew well, listen to your body, stay active and maintain a perky positive mental outlook. I love a perky outlook! Only you and you alone can decide what you eat.


Macrobiotic is an eating plan formed from the ideas about types of

No-one stands over you with a weapon shouting ‘Eat that bar of chocolate or the cat gets it!’ If you are eating too much junk it will show on your face and in your fuller figure. Fresh faced people with a spring in their step do not get that way by visiting fast food joints daily. We seem to swing from over-eat- ing to voluntary starvation as a punish- ment for enjoying food. The world wide obsession with dieting has reached the point of mad- ness. Countries that have wealth are full of people try- ing not to eat and countries


that are described


as Third World are full of people who would be


extremely grateful for the food we reject or waste. And boy, do we waste food.


Perfectly normal, intelligent people talk about putting £30 of


food a WEEK into the bin because they don’t get around to eating it. That is shameful and stupid. It is deemed old fashioned to decide what meal is to be eaten each day for a week but if you were to revert to this rather sensible plan and
