2018 Grape Harvest
After the difficult weather conditions that hit yields of many wine producing regions last year, the good news is that the 2018 harvest shows real promise, it may rival the success of the 2013 vintage. In Europe, the warmth and dryness of July encouraged the vines to flower early and the good weather at the end of August
enabled the grapes to “hang”, developing the varietal characteristics of the grapes. One of our suppliers from Gascogne, Armin & Rémy Grassa, are particularly upbeat “we’re expecting the vintage to offer wines with lots of fruitiness and freshness.” English wineries are also reporting high yields and excellent quality and are very enthusiastic about 2018 being the year they have been working towards. Although a lack of capacity is likely to be this year’s headache in the winery. In the Southern Hemisphere where they harvest in March
the results were mixed. Like us, the New Zealanders recorded the hottest summer on record but February bought unusually wet conditions. Overall winemakers are reporting “concentrated wines with plenty of character”. The Australian weather conditions were very variable but wines from the Barossa and McClaren Valleys in particular

are expecting to produce some “standout” wines for 2018.
Both Chile & Argentina’s vintners are also very excited about a high quality and good-sized crop. Unfortunately, the same does not ring true for South Africa, as their harvest is the smallest for over a decade due to catastrophic drought conditions with yields down as much as 40% in some regions. So on the whole, great news for wine lovers as we eagerly await the 2018’s arrival.
