Jamie’s granddad, Mike, ran the pub for 10 years and was a popular character. He died in 2014 and soon after Jamie decided he would like to have a shot at following in his footsteps. “It wasn’t easy, until then I’d never poured a pint in my life! But I soon learnt the drill and was able to change barrels and order the correct quantity of beer and spirits.” When his granddad had the place there was no food but Jamie thought that would be a good way of getting even more people in, so he soon made use of the pub kitchen and has recently created a stone baked pizza restaurant on the first floor. “We have fantastic river views up there and can seat 26 people” says Jamie. The artisan pizzas are served seven nights a week, from 5.30-9pm. (They’re also available for takeaway too.) “So far the goats cheese one, ‘Billy Goat’, is proving the most popular.” The restaurant has been so busy during the summer the team were serving up to 60 pizzas a night. If

pizza isn’t your thing – don’t panic they also have other tasty things on the menu to try. There’s often live music downstairs and Jamie’s long-term aim is to open a beer garden - they’re currently discussing their plans with local authorities. It’s already an all-season venue with bustling summer traffic and people gathering round a roaring fire in winter. “It’s always been a popular place. When my granddad had the pub it was just like his sitting room and we’re trying to keep some of that cosy charm but also bringing

in a few trendy nautical touches.” So if you haven’t popped down

the road or ventured over the water to visit either venue, why not treat yourself to a pizza with Jamie one evening or a morning coffee with Lottie and Alfonso - you won’t regret it!
