58 East Cork Castlelyons GAA
Castlelyons 3-10 St Catherines 3-16 We travelled to Ballynoe on Monday evening for a Junior B hurling league game with the home team St Catherines.
It was a
lovely evening for hurling and the pitch was in good order with Arthur Murphy on the whistle. We start- ed well with two points by Keith O’Leary and then Catherines had their first score
with Chris Cotter
scoring again for us Shane Fenton who was playing well was fouled and Keith O’Leary put over the re- sulting free to leave us 0-4 to 0-3 on fifteen minutes. Then St Catherines with the Davis brothers, Eoin and Brian, hurling strong in the forward line began to take control and it too a great JP Murphy save to keep us in it before half time. However, despite all the Catherines possession Keith O’Leary, Ian O’Ri- ordan and Chris Cotter had 0-1 apiece to leave it 1-7 to 0-7 at halftime in fa- vour of the Cats.
We started well again in the second half and Peter
Roche put over a 0-1 from out the field. Then we suf- fered a major blow in every sense of the word as Conor McCarthy who was having a fine game at centre back suffered a serious blow to the knee when a hurley was smashed and broken off it. Conor was injured and had to come off. It was unusual that
the only person who
had his name taken was our own coach Colm Bar- ry when he checked with the referee about the mat- ter. Catherines went ahead with a goal and added to it but our lads kept hurling and Keith O’Leary and Shane O’Sullivan had goals for us with 0-1 from An- drew O’Neill.
Catherines
made it 3-12 to 2-9 in their favour with five minutes left but Noel McAuliffe had 0-1 and Keith O’Leary a goal from a 21-yard free to give us hope again. However, we ran out of steam as St Catherines finished the better on a score of 3-10 to 3-16. This
latest defeat is a
little disappointing as we are due to play Sarsfields in the Championship on this Thursday evening at a venue to be announced. We are down a few and Conor McCarthy may be unable to play now due to
injury. We have some lads still away and may now be back for Thursday evening. Best of luck to the lads as no doubt they will give it everything on the night. Team: - John Paul Mur-
phy, Mark Murphy, Liam Moroney, Redmond Walsh, Shane
Fenton, Conor
McCarthy, Shane Flynn, Brian O’Donovan, Peter Roche, Ian O’Riordan, Noel McAuliffe, Ml John Dorgan, Shane
van, Keith O’Leary, Chris Cotter.
Subs: -
O’Sulli- Andrew
O’Neill, Padraig Murphy and Larry Murphy.
Date for next round of PIHC now set. Round 3 of the premier
intermediate hurling cham- pionship is set for the week end of the 2nd
September.
However, we do not know our opponents as the draw is not made while there are some games to be played in round two.
Last weekend will go down in history as one of hurling’s greatest. Last week end will go
down as one of the greatest weekends ever in hurling as we had incredible games on
sport@eastcorkjournal.ie Notes
Saturday and Sunday both a draw with Cork failing in extra time to Limerick and Clare and Galway both live to fight another day. Both games were of the highest quality.
Cork with an in-
tricate game of speed and moving the sliotar through the lines were interrupted by a strong Limerick outfit who were coached to mark the space while off the
opponent
cially on Anthony Nash puckouts. Then Limerick on the turnover were not afraid to drive angle pucks up into the corner to allow their men space to work. This kept
Limerick in
touch all the time and de- spite Cork’s six-point lead coming into the last eight minutes one could suspect that kick in the Treaty men as they were on their game. The injuries to Cork did not help especially when captain Sheamie Harnedy, a hero all year had to retire. Limerick took over in the extra time and are back in an All-Ireland Final after eleven years. Hard look on the Rebels but what a year for the Rebel fans with six great championship games and a Munster title. They gave it everything and no shame in coming up short. Well done especially to our own Colm Spillane who again had a cracking game on Sunday as he held his
lines well despite fierce pressure at times. There is more left in this team with a few additions so bring on 2019. The Saturday game saw pitted against
Clare Sunday with the venue
Thurles and the word is it is a sell-out already. Cork Under 21 Hurlers
the
standing espe-
2017 champions and the bookies favourites for this years All Ireland name- ly Galway. When Gal- way ran up a nine point lead we feared the worst but
credit great work to
the men on the line with a deft change of playing style as Colm Galvin was moved in sweeping and Tony Kelly moved outfield for the Banner. Slowly but surely Clare cut into the Galway lead. The hurling was mighty as both teams would have even settled the pilots’ strike as they landed Ryanair’s auto pilot down on Johnny Glynn for Gal- way and John Conlon for Clare who were real heroes under the high ball. Peter Duggan from Spancill Hill was on song and showed what he promised all year with a man of the match display scoring 0-13. In- juries nearly cost Galway and when Shane O’Don- nell put Clare 0-2 ahead in extra time the Banner roar was heard across town. However, the Tribesmen proved why they are cham- pions and, in the end, it was Clare who live to fight an- other day. That day is next
play Wexford in All Ireland Hurling Semi Final. Well the Rebels can ban-
ish the feelings of defeat by looking forward to the All-Ireland
U21 hurling
semi-final in Nowlan Park next Saturday as Cork take on Wexford. This should be a cracking game as both teams are laden with good hurlers. Wexford had Gal- way almost buried when they led them by two points into the last minute of extra time but a goal from Sean Bleahene with seconds left gave the Tribesmen their first ever Leinster title on a score 4-21 to 2-26.
In
contrast Cork had a facile victory over a much-fan- cied Tipperary outfit in the Munster Final on a score of 2-23 to 1-13. Looking at Cork that night they were razor sharp, well-disci- plined and well coached. It is now 20 years since Cork last won the All-Ireland ti- tle in this grade when Dan Murphy of Ballincollig was the captain back in 1998. The Rebels share the lead with Kilkenny on eleven titles apiece whereas Wex- ford have just one title back in 1965. Cork have seven players from the
senior
panel of last Sunday and it includes our own Castlely-
ons man Niall O’Leary and Eoin Roche of Bride Rov- ers also.
Dinny Ring and
his selectors will not rely on tradition here and will have the lads motivated to the last. We wish them the best of luck and especial- ly to our own man Niall O’Leary. Niall a cool class hurler was the anchor at centre back for Imokilly as won the county in 2017 and he continues that fine form again this year.
