Limerick 3-32
Cork 2-31 (After extra Time)
After an epic first semi-final on Saturday afternoon, much was ex- pected from the all Mun- ster pairing of Cork and Limerick in Croke Park on Sunday afternoon and it too did not disappoint as we witnessed another all action encounter with Limerick booking their place in this year’s All Ire- land Final after another epic contest that took ex- tra time to decide the win- ner. Who the opponent will be will not be known for another week, but that will not bother Limerick as they can now focus on the final preparation, in the knowledge that they will have an extra week to get ready for the big occa-
sion. For Cork it was a third semi-final defeat in a row and from being in a strong position to win, leading by six points with just ten minutes remaining, they capitulated to a Limerick side that has a never say die attitude and a strong bench that contribut- ed enormously to their eventual victory. Cork in contrast did not have the strength in depth and when three of their out- standing players, Daniel Kearney, Daragh Fitzgib- bon and Seamus Harnedy had to go off injured, they had no leaders to step into the breach. In contrast the Limerick bench was much stronger with four
of their subs scoring with Shane Dowling and Pat Ryan getting the crucial goals that finally ended the Cork hopes of reach- ing the final. The match itself was
a different one from the Clare/Galway encoun- ter, but it was no less en- tertaining as both sets of players threw themselves into the action, having already drawn with each other in the Munster cam- paign and with a flurry of points in the opening minutes, it was set up for a cracking contest. Pat- rick Horgan opened the
scoring for Cork, while Daragh O’Donovan lev- elled for Limerick as the sides went for broke from the off. Seamus Harne- dy, Daragh Fitzgibbon, Shane Kingston and Daniel Kearney were all on target for Cork in the opening quarter but points from Gearoid Hegarty, Diarmuid Byrnes, Aaron Gillane and Seamus Fla- nagan had the sides level at 0-7 each in a pulsating opening quarter. Gillane kicked over when he might have goaled. It continued score for score with Gillane and

Horgan trading points, while Mark Coleman, Christopher Joyce and Shane Kingston all got on the score-sheet for Cork who were playing quiet well, but they still regis- tered some poor wides as well. In contrast Lim- erick were more precise with their finishing as Graham Mulcahy flashed over three points from play. Gillane had another chance but this time his kicked effort went wide. A Mark Coleman side- line cut was followed by a first from Tom Morrissey for Limerick and when
Daniel Kearney shot over Cork held a two-point ad- vantage going into injury time. In a game full of twists and turns, Seamus Flanagan turned provider as he found Cian Lynch who finished to the net to put Limerick ahead as they went to the interval leading by 1-12 to 0-14 as another classic was un- folding before our eyes. In all their previous
games, Cork found anoth- er gear in the second half and again on this occasion the Rebels roared forward with Daragh Fitzgibbon, Conor Lehane, Daniel
Kearney and Patrick Hor- gan all bagging points with Limerick finding the going tough as Gearoid Hegar- ty and Cian Lynch man- aged points for limerick who also had a few poor wides. It took a brilliant save from Anthony Nash to deprive Cian Lynch of a second Limerick goal in the 42nd
minute and with
Cork through Horgan who bagged four points in a row beginning to get to grips with Limerick, it looked as if the Rebels might be on their way. A brilliant solo effort from Continued on next page
