Junior B Hurling Championship Carrigtwohill 0-20 (20) Cobh 1-8 (11) in Lisgoold on Friday, .

July 20th the next

Referee: Willie Wallis Carrig are through to round of the

East Cork Junior B Hurl- ing Championship after a strong finish saw them overcome Cobh in Lis- goold on Friday, July 20th Carrig captain Shane

.

Healy, operating at cor- ner-forward, was Carrig’s main outlet in the first half, notching four points inside the first fifteen min- utes. A Chris Keegan free and a Daire Crotty strike from distance

rounded

out Carrig’s early total as Cobh managed four points in reply. Cobh edged ahead in the sev- enteenth minute however when they raised the only green flag of the evening. Chris Keegan, who was unerring from placed balls all night, drew Carrig lev- el with two frees either side of a fifth Cobh point.

A Dara McCann strike, a fourth Keegan free and a Shane Healy ’65 gave Carrig a three-point lead at the half, 0-11 to 1-5. Daire

Crotty opened

the scoring in the second half but it was Cobh who had the upper hand in the third quarter when they added three consecutive points to bring them back within the minimum, 0-12 to 1-8. Carrig were then up against it when Cobh were awarded a penalty in the forty-fifth minute but Stephen Flynn stood his ground and saved well to keep Carrig ahead. The penalty proved a wake-up call and Carrig took over the game once again. For the last fifteen minutes Carrig’s defence

didn’t

concede a score and up the other end Carrig reeled over eight points to finish on top. Four Chris Keegan placed balls (three frees, one ’65), a sixth Healy point, a sec- ond McCann score and efforts from Luke Kelly and Kiitan Oke complet- ed Carrig’s tally. Well done to the play-

ers and coaches on the result and the club looks forward to following the

goold on a warm Tuesday evening. Trailing by 8 points at the half, Carrig rallied in the second to emerge victorious by 10. Carrig got off

to the worst possible start and

trailed 2-4 to no score inside

ten minutes. A

Watergrasshill goal in the first minute set the tone for a dominant opening quarter and a second goal from a 21-metre free on seven minutes

left Car-

rig reeling. A Liam Gos- nell free opened Carrig’s account in the eleventh minute. Watergrasshill responded before a point from Ollie Baverstock and a second Gosnell free on fifteen minutes brought Carrig into the game. It was a false dawn however as Watergrasshill worked their third goal three min- utes later and Carrig were in trouble, 3-5 to 0-3. The fightback didn’t take long to emerge though as Carrig worked the ball up the field from the subse- quent puckout and Paul O’Hanlon netted for Car- rig’s opening goal. A trio of Gosnell frees brought Carrig within 5 points with eight minutes left in the half. An expected Car- rig push before the half didn’t emerge and it was Watergrasshill who upped

the intensity and rattled off 1-2 from the 23rd 28th

to the minute. Two Gosnell

frees just before half time gave Carrig a much-need- ed lifeline going into the turnaround. 1-8 to 4-7 after thirty minutes. Carrig had to overturn point

a three against

deficit to claim a draw in injury time in round one

Castlelyons

but this was a far bigger challenge. Nevertheless, Carrig emerged with de- sire and determination and simply blew Water- grasshill away. Carrig had levelled the

game

within eight minutes of the restart. Two Ollie Baverstock strikes and a Brendan Twomey point set

the table

Carrig’s third green flag of the night and substitute James Mulcahy stretched Carrig’s lead to five points on fifty-two minutes, 3-17 to 4-9.

half-time

could only answer with one more free, their third and final point of the half as the

Carrig defence

gave no quarter. Carrig finished the game on a high with Liam Gosnell scoring another 1-2 and Ollie Baverstock lofting the final score in the six- tieth minute. Second half score; Carrig 3-12 Wa- tergrasshill 0-3. Full time score: Carrig 4-20 Water- grasshill 4-10. Congratulations to

for Paul

O’Hanlon’s second goal before another Twomey effort and a Brendan Mc- Carthy score had Carrig even; 2-13 to 4-7. Carrig were relentless and goal- keeper Stephen Flynn edged the

team ahead

with a monster free in the thirty-ninth minute. Wa- tergrasshill mustered their first scores of the half with two frees in the for- ty-second and forty-sixth minutes but they were quickly matched by two Gosnell placed balls. Ol- lie Baverstock then raised

the players on a fantastic second half performance and to the management and players for an out- standing turnaround. Carrig have

gressed to the East Cork semi-final and await their opponent based on their final standing in the round robin table. Scorers: L. Gosnell
