Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Championship enters knockout stages

The Liberty Insurance

All-Ireland Senior Camo- gie Championship enters its knockout stages weekend

this when . Cork’s

Páirc Uí Chaoimh will play host to a Quarter-Fi- nals double-header on Sat- urday August 4th

The first Quarter-Final sees Tipperary take

on

Waterford before Galway and Dublin clash in the evening’s second fixture as all four sides battle

it

out for coveted Semi-Final places.

Tipperary finished sec- ond in Group 2 with three wins and a draw to their name, edging Dublin into second place by virtue of score difference. An Déise will be playing in their very first knockout match after a breakthrough campaign at senior level which saw them collect two wins to claim third place.

The Dubs narrowly missed out on second place after their draw with Tip- perary in their final group match whilst Galway fin- ished second in Group 1

Both fixtures will be

broadcast live on RTÉ Two as well as live on the RTÉ Player world- wide and the winners of these

ties will progress

to the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Cham- pionship Semi-Finals in Semple Stadium, Thurles on Saturday August 18th where they will face either Cork or Kilkenny who advanced directly to the Semi-Finals having topped their respective groups.

Cork 2-19 Kilkenny 0-18 Cork claimed their 9th

All Ireland Intermediate hurling championship in Nowlan Park on Saturday following a close battle with titleholders Kilkenny. Goals were

key, and

full-forward Dan Man- gan supplied both – one in either half . It was 0-2 apiece before Cork – aided by the strong wind - struck the opening major after just six minutes with St Catherine’s player Man- gan finding the net. Kilkenny had the per-

fect response though with James Bergin popping over two from placed balls and one from midfielder Paul Hennebry. All square after 10 minutes. Cork found their rhythm once again, reeling off the next four points unanswered, two were courtesy of former county senior Cormac Murphy.

The free-taker

accuracy of James Bergin

kept the Kilkenny score- board ticking over. How- ever, white flags from Michael Collins, Stephen Condon (free) and Jack Walsh enabled the visitors into a 1-10 to 0-8 lead at the interval. Cork goalkeeper Shane

Hurley was called into action straight

from the

restart, and although play- ing into the teeth of the elements, crucially the Re- bels maintained the upper hand. The margin never going below three points. By the three-quarter junc- ture, Cork were 1-16 to 0-13 to the good. Stephen Condon was a constant threat while

from placed balls, captain

Michael

Russell from Aghada and Shane O’Donovan an- chored a solid defence. Kilkenny pegged back

with their only dropped points coming in their fi- nal group match against a rampant Kilkenny side.
