One in a Million Aaron McMahon on Road to Recovery

There has been an out- pouring of well wishes on social media for 18 year old Aaron McMahon, since posting an update on Monday following his life saving operation last week. In February 2017, the
young Shanagarry man was diagnosed with Chor- doma, a rare form of can- cer tumour that occurs in the bones of the skull base and spine, and is part of a group of malignant bone and soft tissue tumours called Sarcomas. He re- cently underwent a mara- thon 6 hours operation to have it removed. Chordomas account for
just 3 per cent of all bone tumours and 20 percent are primary spinal tu- mours.
The people of Cork
rallied around the family to raise €140,000 for the ground breaking surgery in the United States, when the HSE were unable to support Aaron. In a post to Instagram
and Facebook the Shana- garry teen said “Lifesaving operation over and suc- cessful..... it will be a long road before I even get back to my old self but it’ll be well worth it #oneinamil- lion @ UPMC Presbyte- rian.” Aaron’s parents, Paul
and Gail, say they are hopeful that doctors in the US will give their son the all clear to travel home in the coming weeks, or early in September. Dr Paul Gardner and
his team at the University Hospital of Pittsburgh said the entire tumour has been
