Cllr Danielle Twomey

has backed a call for road liners to be directly em- ployed by Cork County Council. The Sinn Féin Cllr was among a number of public representatives to back a Motion by Fianna Fail Cllr Joe Carroll, stating that unless the Local Authority purchase their own lining equipment,

the county faces an epidemic of road

istent white lines already deemed hazardous, mean an even higher risk of ac- cidents which, in turn, can lead to insurance claims on the county, Cllr Carroll told the full sitting of Cork County Council. The Fianna Fail Cllr said the situation is so treacherous, with parts of the county waiting up to 4 years to have markings renewed, that its time the Local Authority purchase their

Cork County Council have outsourced its road lining and marking requirements to a Tipperary company. The majority of road

markings are carried out on resurfaced or surface dressed roads, or specific road safety projects direct- ly funded by Central Gov- ernment. Cllr Twomey said while is desirable

it that the

Council purchase and hire its own road crew. the Lo- cal Authority must review how its contractor oper- ates. The

Cllr said it took over a month for a request for two yellow junction box- es to be painted on the one road, each taking five weeks apart to paint. “It’s been explained that

they paint north bound lanes first and return to paint south bound lanes which doesn’t make sense” commented Cllr Twomey. Independent Cllr Tim-

He said “if you had a follow. In

some places it’s around bridges and bad bends where the road marking is worn out.” In a report to Council the County Director

of

Roads, Tom Stritch, said it was not “practical” or “cost effective” for the Lo- cal Authority

to directly

employ its own road mark- ing crew. “Road

marking work

is mainly seasonal, very much weather dependant, and if Local Authorities had a road marking crew, all counties and Municipal districts would be looking for the crew around the same time.” Independent Cllr Alan Coleman agreed, saying

Murphy “there are very few

contractors in the

country, which means they can charge what they want. We should have a road marker ourselves at our own discretion when we need one.“

County CEO Tim

Lucey said he could not see the Local Authority purchasing its own lining equipment in the near future, but was happy for the Roads and Transport committee in discussing it further. He said he was confi-

dent in how Mr Stritch was balancing the limited resources with which was provided.

She paid a special tribute to the collectors who once again gave of their time, including Pexie Jacobs, Josie Buckley, Breda Scannell, Sheila O’ K’eeffe and her husband. As the only founder Committee Member I, too, wish to thank the members who are giving dedicated service and especially our Chairperson, Helen, who spent hours col- lecting on Friday. She also gives of her time weekly with Larry Keating and his wife, Maura, to ensure the success and pleasure for those interested in arts, ceramics, knit- ting or, indeed, for those who just come along for a cup of tea- in fact so many members enjoy the camaraderie and this is what life is all about. For those of us that were there from the start when we fundraised for two buses and helped participant mem- bers on their weekly trip to Blackrock long before the lifts on the buses, but we gave of this service freely, and the bus drivers were also helpful. Time, however, moves on and our bus drivers are unavailable due to all the new
