Caribbean, Amazon & Central America
Uncover an abundance of natural wonders on this inspiring voyage to the breathtaking Amazon region, where you’ll encounter unparalleled arrays of flora and fauna. Opportunities to seek out elusive caimans and pink dolphins and to witness the bizarre phenomenon of the ‘Meeting of the Waters’ are unmissable. You can also discover a vibrant Brazilian tradition during a private performance of the Boi Bumba Festival, and even stay overnight in the rainforest.
Alter do Chao
After settling into your home-from-home, Braemar, in Manaus you’ll have two full days to indulge in ultimate exploration. The city is the gateway to an abundance of once-in-a-lifetime experiences: you can take a boat tour into the flooded forest in search of caimans; join a jungle trek for a close-up look at the wonderful surroundings and to learn survival techniques; and meet an indigenous Amazon tribe and gain an insight into their culture. There’s even the chance to spend an evening in a stilted lodge nestled in the rainforest, an experience you’ll never forget.
Anavilhanas National Park is a wonderful, UNESCO- listed archipelago in Rio Negro that’s made up of around 400 islands. Here you’ll have a day to relax on the beautiful beaches and go in search of fascinating pink river dolphins.
Continue your exploration with a visit to Parintins. The city is host to Brazil’s second biggest festival after Rio’s Carnival – an explosion of colour, culture and sound known as the Boi Bumba. Although the celebrations take place in June, you can still enjoy the carnival atmosphere with a private theatrical
performance of the show, where the alluring story, carnival costumes and tantalising music are sure to have you on your feet. Alternatively, you can admire the cathedral and pick up some souvenirs from the colourful floating market.
You’ll then arrive into Santarém. Along with the beaches in the Alter do Chao district and the Mercado Modelo (city market), the must-see attraction here is the ‘Meeting of the Waters’. Here, the different coloured waters of the Tapajós and Amazon rivers flow side-by-side without mixing – a sight that has to be seen to be believed.
Your journey continues to the Caribbean and the
‘Spice Island’ of Grenada. Alongside volcanic crater lakes and idyllic beaches, you can discover the natural paradise of the Grand Etang National Park. St Lucia’s soaring Pitons and Diamond Botanical Gardens are next, before calling into Dominica, where the exotic interior and beautiful Emerald Pool are not to be missed. Your adventure will come to an end in Barbados. But before you depart, there’s time to enjoy some of the highlights of this stunning island.
