There’ll be a day to stroll the dusty streets of charming Mamoudzou, or perhaps venture further afield and take in the highlights of Mayotte, including the Indian Ocean’s largest lagoon. Afterwards, step back on board to soak up the party atmosphere of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with the very best festive food and fun. Boxing Day brings a call into Port Réunion; your gateway to Réunion Island’s sweeping volcanic landscapes, dense forests and beautiful waterfalls. The island’s southern villages are fascinating too: the charming Creole houses here remain much as they were fifty years ago.
La Digue
An overnight stay on Mauritius is next, affording time to explore in depth. You could perhaps sample the cultural diversity of the Mauritian way of life, from tea tasting in the beautiful Chinese Pagoda to exploring the local Stamp Museum and colourful central market. Alternatively, a tour of the south of the island showcases breathtaking natural wonders, including the Trou-aux-Cerfs Volcano and the ‘Seven Coloured Earth’ sand dunes.
A second helping of Réunion Island presents the chance to embark on an inspirational helicopter tour and enjoy breathtaking views into the ravine of the island’s active volcano and across the countryside.
After toasting the arrival of 2019 on board, two days on idyllic Praslin Island kicks off the new year in fine style. You may opt to uncover the tropical forest of Vallee de Mai, home to huge Coco de Mer nuts and rare black parrots; encounter famous giant land tortoises; or simply take your pick from beaches such as Anse Lazio and Cote d’Or, or those found on La Digue Island. A mesmerising finale before you disembark the following day.
