Africa & the Indian Ocean Islands

On this incredible journey spread over five weeks, you’ll indulge in Atlantic island-hopping and African wildlife adventures, before uncovering the captivating islands of the Indian Ocean. There are countless unforgettable experiences to tick off along the way, from visiting the island of Napoleon’s death to exploring the world’s oldest desert; from heading off in search of the mighty ‘Big Five’ to encountering Madagascar’s endemic species.

Soon after joining your ship you’ll be immersed in beautiful Gran Canaria, where the iconic sand dunes of Maspalomas are a great place to unwind. Two distinctive Cape Verdean destinations follow, both alive with intriguing architecture, colourful markets and traditional culture. After some relaxing time spent at sea Boudicca will circumnavigate the isolated Ascension Island – with a running commentary allowing you to learn of its history – before calling at remote St Helena, a captivating destination as it was here where Napoleon was exiled and died.

Walvis Bay is a haven for wildlife, and also your gateway to the colossal sand dunes of the world’s oldest desert, the Namib. Meanwhile, within reach from the sleepy town of Lüderitz is the sand- engulfed mining ghost town of Kolmanskop, which makes for a fascinating visit.

The South African leg of your journey begins with an overnight stay in Cape Town. You’re sure to be spoilt for choice with the highlights on offer here, from the scenery at Cape Point and the alluring Winelands region, to Boulders Beach and the stunning

biodiversity of Table Mountain National Park. There’s also a chance to visit Robben Island and learn of Nelson Mandela’s inspirational life. From Port Elizabeth, you can head off in search of the ‘Big Five’ at a choice of game reserves, or perhaps view magnificent elephants from a 4x4 at Addo Elephant Park. Richards Bay offers more wildlife adventures: nearby Lake St Lucia, within the protected iSimangaliso Wetland Park, features hippos, crocodiles, pelicans and flamingos.

A relaxing day in Mamoudzou is yours to spend as you wish: the charming streets are well worth a stroll, while further afield is one of the world’s largest enclosed coral lagoons. After this comes an unforgettable chance to seek out the endemic wildlife of Madagascar, such as lemurs and chameleons. You’ll find Hell-Ville ideally placed for exploring Lokobe National Park and the island of Nosy Komba, as well as Nosy Be’s tropical rainforests. The Seychellois capital of Victoria will conclude your cruise. You may wish to round everything off with indulgent exploration among white-sand beaches or encounter the famous giant land tortoises on a tour.
