Oceania & the Far East
Experience highlights all the way as you sail from Cairns to Bali via fascinating Papua New Guinea and Indonesian islands. Each destination has its own story to tell. There are chances to uncover faraway tribal cultures and World War II history, as well as encounter the world’s largest lizard. The scenery is sure to captivate you too, from the Great Barrier Reef – which you can view from a flight overhead – to Bali’s rice terraces and volcanic vistas.
Komodo Island Great Barrier Reef
Madang
After meeting Boudicca on the northeast coast of Australia, visits to a trio of destinations in Papua New Guinea – including two maiden calls – and three breathtaking Indonesian islands will present a colourful feast of history, culture and natural beauty. Cairns is not only the start point of your journey, but also gateway to botanical gardens, tropical rainforests and dense wetlands alive with native Australian wildlife. Also within reach is the awe- inspiring Great Barrier Reef, a wonderland of over 400 coral species, over 1,500 species of fish and an array of exotic flora and fauna.
Take your pick of these natural wonders before you set sail to Papua New Guinea, where you’ll have a chance to experience Alotau’s Cultural Festival, an extravagant expression of tribal culture. The festival is rich in traditional music, dance and chanting from groups from around the country. With locally made gifts and souvenirs available for you to take home too, this very special event is not-to-be-missed. During your time in Papua New Guinea, maiden calls at Alotau and Wewak, as well as a stop at Madang, will also present opportunities to connect with the
country’s fascinating war history and go in search of battle-scarred airfields and impressive caves and tunnels networks that were used in World War II.
A myriad of magical scenes awaits you in Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelagic country. Ambon City, another maiden call, welcomes you to the fertile lands of Ambon Island, which boasts gently mountainous landscapes and picturesque bays that beg for exploration. The city, which was one of the first places in Indonesia to be ruled by colonial powers, is a delight to explore; its rich history is highlighted in the mix of Ambonese and European architecture.
On Komodo Island you can head ashore to seek out Komodo dragons – the world’s largest lizards – in their natural habitat; and discover the intriguing Pink Beach. Finally, it’s on to beautiful Bali. Before you leave Boudicca, Bali’s remarkable Ubud rice terraces and abundant ancient temples are just some of the tempting attractions you could discover, if you can manage to leave the sun-soaked beaches of Benoa behind.
