Caribbean, Amazon & Central America

Very few places on Earth feature such a diverse array of flora and fauna as the Amazon region, and this exhilarating adventure is the perfect way to experience it for yourself. You can go in search of wildlife, including the elusive caiman; view the natural phenomenon of the ‘Meeting of the Waters’; join an exciting jungle trek; and see a live performance of the Boi Bumba Festival. There’s even the chance to spend the night in a lodge, nestled in the rainforest.

Marajó

Amazon River

After meeting Braemar in Bridgetown, Barbados, you’ll have time to enjoy some of the highlights of this stunning island, from the white-sand beaches to the beauty of Hunte’s Gardens. You’ll then see a slightly different side to the Caribbean with a stop in St George’s on the ‘Spice Island’, Grenada. Alongside volcanic crater lakes, a large part of the interior includes Grand Etang National Park, a natural paradise.

Belém is capital of the Brazilian state of Pará and has many attractions for you to choose from – there’s a good selection of museums, historic buildings, a boating lake and a fabulous market. On tours there are chances to spot Amazon birdlife, including the Ibis; visit the ecological park, Mangal das Garças; or journey to the river island of Marajó.

After spending two relaxing days at sea you’ll reach Santarém. Along with the beaches in the Alter do Chao district and the Mercado Modelo (city market), the must-see attraction here is the ‘Meeting of the Waters’. Here, the different coloured waters of the Tapajós and Amazon rivers flow side-by-side without mixing – a sight that has to be seen to be believed.

Colourful Parintins is a joy to explore. It’s best known for hosting one of the biggest festivals in Brazil, the magical Boi Bumba, which is second only to Rio’s Carnival. Although the celebrations take place in June, you can still enjoy the carnival atmosphere with a private theatrical performance of the show. The alluring story, carnival costumes and tantalising music are sure to have you on your feet. Alternatively, you can admire the cathedral and pick up some souvenirs from the colourful floating market.

Manaus deserves a three-day stay for you to really explore. The proud capital of the Amazonas State is the gateway to the wonders and wildlife of the Amazon Rainforest. A host of experiences await: take a boat tour into the flooded forest in search of caimans; join a jungle trek for a close-up look at the wonderful surroundings and to learn survival techniques; meet an indigenous Amazon tribe; and encounter fascinating pink dolphins in the wild. What’s more, you can opt to spend an evening in a stilted lodge nestled in the rainforest itself, it’s sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a fitting finale to your adventure.
