sport@eastcorkjournal.ie Highlights Of The Year Aghada Crowned Intermediate County Champions
Aghada 0-16 Eire Óg 0-8
East Cork were to
continue on a roll in the remaining grades with Aghada coming out on
top in the Intermediate final, turning in a huge- ly impressive display to capture the title against
an Eire Óg side that had an off day. The final was the seventh game for Aghada who after an opening round 2-15 to 3-9 win over Bally- garvan, were defeated by Sarsfields by 3-14 to 2-19 in round 2A. Agha-
da got back to winning ways defeating Ball- inhassig by 3-15 to 0-15 to enter round 4 where Kildorrery provided them with a searching test before the Rostellan outfit, prevailed by 3-21 to 3-18.
Midleton were to pro-
vide the quarter final opposition and after a dour contest
Aghada
just prevailed by 2-12 to 2-9 to set up a semi-final meeting with all Ireland Junior champions May- field. Here Aghada re-
ally underlined their po- tential turning in a vastly improved display, to win comfortably by 1-23 to 0-11. Eire Óg who had defeated
Kildorrery
in the opening round, had taken several nota- ble scalps, among them
Sarsfields on their way to reaching the final, but on the day Aghada were to prove far more pro- ficient in front of goal, while Eire Óg left their shooting boots at home as Aghada
prevailed
winning by 0-16 to 0-8, with John Paul O’Con- nor captaining the side to victory.

St Catherine’s Crowned Junior “A” Hurling Champions
St Catherine’s 2-10 Brian Dillons 1-13
The “Jamesey Kelle- her” Cup is the most sought
after competi-
tion in East Cork and this year St Catherine’s
last year’s defeated fi- nalist, triumphed over Russell Rovers by 1-12 to 0-10 in a hard fought encounter at Clonmult
(Replay) St Catherine’s 0-13 Brian Dillon’s 0-12
Memorial Park in Mid- leton. That win propelled
both finalists into the county competition and
as luck would have it both would win their opening games and meet in the semi-final. Another epic battle en-
sued with St Catherine’s running out
winners
by 3-17 to 2-10 which did not reflect the fine performance of Russell Rovers on the
night.
That win took “The Saint’s” onto a county final meeting with Bri- an Dillon’s and after
two cracking contests the East Cork side pre- vailed by the minimum of margins to go back into the
Intermediate
ranks with team captain Dan Mangan leading the way to a deserved triumph. The exertions of both games and the
injury to a few players left St Catherine’s a lit- tle
stretched and they
bowed out to Tipperary champions Ballybacon/ Grange in the Munster Semi Final, but all in all a great year for St Cath- erine’s.
