Midleton CBS Boys Primary School Help Spread Christmas Cheer

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

Thanks to Midleton CBS

primary School, families who have struggled all year will have food on the table this Christmas. Last Friday 15 Decem-

ber, the pupils handed over food they had collected throughout November and December to the St. Pat- rick’s conference, of Saint Vincent De Paul (SVP), Midleton. The sizable donation will

be made into special Christ- mas Hampers for families across East Cork. Principal Mary Cunning- ham said for Midleton CBS Boys National School, their Christmas food appeal “is a way of sharing the joy of Christmas.” Despite the recent eco- nomic news that

the Irish

Economy is continuing to grow and the level of unem- ployment set to plummet to 5%, SVP say the rising eco- nomic tide is leaving some working poor hungry and

treading water. Denis O’Shea from SVP

told the students the food provided would make a “huge difference.” “If you have very little, thing means a

every little

huge difference.” The

Midleton confer- ence member said that this

year was the worst in living memory for the charity, with unprecedented demand be- ing put on the service. He said SVP were now consequences

seeing the

of job losses due to serious illness. “There has been an in- credible run with people,

with serious illness. People who were leading normal lives, were struck down with illness and suddenly were in trouble with mortgage and rent.” “Saint Vincent De Paul

is not meant to be a substi- tute for social welfare”, [the charity step in until as such

time they get some help from the state], commented Mr O’Shea. To contribute financial- to ensure families who struggling, or elderly

ly, are

can keep warm throughout Christmas, you can donate to any SVP shop or online at www.svp.ie.

Christmas and New Year Greetings to Friends at home and abroad, neighbours, those who are

ill at home or in hospital, and to those who lost loved ones during the year, may the Peace of the Christmas time help them come to terms with their loss. We must remember nurses, doctors, carers and all who give of their time during the Christmas season making life more bearable for those in their care. From Kathleen Woulfe.

My wishes for the New Year are as

follows That the proposed greenway from Midleton to Youghal would commence in 2018, as it would be a tremendous benefit to Midleton, Youghal and the towns en route. However, I would hope that someday Iarnroid Eireann may decide to re-open the rail like from Cork to Youghal, which is the wish of so many people, but I cannot see it happening in my lifetime – I know how people feel as I was involved in the Midleton-Cork link which is a tre- mendous success. That continued support be given to the Credit Union movement which is beneficial coun- trywide, and in this context I extend Congratulations to Credit unions nationally as they have been named overall winners of the CXi in The Customer Experience Awards. “Go Raibh Gach Sonas Ort, An Nollaig Seo” From Kathleen Woulfe.
