PROVIDING GREATER OPERATIONAL
EFFICIENCIES FOR OFFSHORE WIND As the number of offshore windfarms continues to increase globally, this activity poses new
challenges for developers, including the safe transfer of personnel and cargo between turbines or offshore substations and vessels
Ampelmann is internationally recognised for its innovative motion compensation technology and it has been supplying the offshore wind industry with safe, cost-effective gangways for more than ten years. Its systems have become crucial to the safety of people working in some of the harshest environments.
ONE CLICK, ONE MINUTE The company’s E1000 gangway transfer system, enhanced recently, is an innovative and adaptable motion compensated access system which has the ability to transform from a gangway into a crane boom to provide full logistics requirements. The improvements allowed the conversion of the gangway from personnel to cargo mode to be reduced from at least ten minutes to less than one
minute, providing greater operational efficiencies.
Diederick Nierstrasz, Ampelmann’s Product Development Manager for Offshore Wind explained: “Building on the success of the existing E1000, we recognised an opportunity to enhance the current system to reduce the time and physical effort taken to change the gangway work mode from personnel to cargo. This now takes less than one minute, which is a huge time saving for our clients.”
DRIVING EFFICIENCIES Ampelmann’s A400 gangway is also an ideal solution for the offshore wind sector as it provides greater capacity for equipment transportation between vessels and wind turbines. Widened gangways support the use of trolleys
that can carry up to 400kg of cargo on Euro-sized industry standard pallets. A single operator is required to use the system and all cargo and personnel can be transferred using the elevator.
Friso Talsma, Ampelmann’s Sales and Business Development Manager for Offshore Wind added: “By working closely with our customers we have been able to develop a system that meets their needs and allows them to work safely and more effectively. Providing a full system that includes a gangway capable of transporting a pallet, a trolley and elevator is something we believe will be of great benefit to the offshore wind sector.”
