The roll out of better, faster and more widely available mobile data services has revolutionised data collection from remote sites
GPRS connection means instant access to virtually unlimited data from a mast. With the modem always on line, developers can expect continuous delivery of data at broadband speeds to a dedicated server. Data are then accessible by desktop PC for instant appraisal and analysis. Many sensors now incorporate serial data connection that allows the operator to monitor, troubleshoot and programme individual sensors remotely via the modem. A greater range of sensors is now possible and more ambitious data campaigns can be delivered.
Met masts are frequently used in conjunction with Lidar or Sodar to build a complete and accurate profile of the wind over an extended site.
The met mast provides long term correlation, while the more mobile technologies are used for micro- siting and investigation of complex terrain. Measurement by physical sensors continues to be a valued means of resource assessment and performance monitoring.
CHALLENGE
The challenge faced by mast installers is finding a means of transporting and erecting steel structures the size of modern wind turbine towers, onto sites where there are often no roads, no facilities and tight budgets. Discovery masts, where the developer seeks to confirm the wind resource in advance of a project, represent a high risk investment. Taller turbines mean higher met masts, larger heavier
components and more installation machinery.
In spite of uncertainties surrounding consent for onshore wind, there remain developers prepared to take the long view. As the cost of wind generation continues to fall, new projects and re-powering or extending existing windfarms, is fuelling continued demand for accurate wind data.
