RE-POWERING


bought the wind farm in 2002 and has owned and operated it ever since. As a result the Edwards family are shareholders in the group.


Between 2009 and 2011, the group invested £11.8 million re-powering the windfarm, replacing ten 400kW turbines with four machines and more than doubling the total installed capacity of the site to 9.2MW of wind power. For the lifetime of the windfarm, the group will contribute at least £9,200 per year (rising with inflation) to a community fund. This fund is controlled by a committee of local people and used to support community initiatives.


In this case the windfarm was repowered after 18 years of being operational. But for developers and onshore asset managers the question in when to repower if that is the option.


DECISION MAKING Brodies LPP, a recognised UK Law on onshore wind projects recognises that the decision to repower depends on financial performance of the existing windfarm (output of existing turbines; subsidies; maintenance costs; expiring warranties), weighed against what could be achieved using new turbines and the cost of removing the old turbines and erecting the new ones. This in turn will depend upon re-powering policy and what will be permitted – e.g. with a hub height of 135m, rotor diameter of 126m and a total height of 198m, the Enercon E-126 can generate up to 7.58MW.
