NEXT GENERATION ACCESS – GANGWAY CASE STUDY

Safe, efficient and reliable access are key for successful offshore operations

The market is realising more and more that the time of helicopter flights and man riding baskets are over, gangways have become custom and the preferred way of transferring crew.

THE NEXT GENERATION

However it is time for the next phase in the design of gangways - the next generation. Listening to the market it became clear that they wanted more than just safe transfer, it should become a total logistical solution. One of the needs was a continuous access system, possible to stay landed at the offshore structure for a long time, where the system does not need to shut down to allow new personnel on the gangway, as seen in traditional systems. It was calculated that this continuous access could guarantee 30% quicker cycle times.

FIRST DELIVERY

After listening to all the needs from the market Barge Master designed the Next Generation Gangway. The first system was delivered to Vroon for their SOV, the VOS Start, this summer. The gangway is mounted on a height adjustable with integrated elevator, making it possible to land on any height and have a stepless horizontal transfer. By luffing, slewing and telescoping only the tip of the gangway is held still, reducing the power consumption and the footprint of the gangway dramatically.

Secondly there was a need for the possibility to always land horizontally, making it also possible to transfer cargo more easily. With the horizontal access transfers are much safer and more comfortable.

COMPLETE PACKAGE A remote controlled cargo trolley can transfer 800kg of equipment. Next to that the gangway can be equipped with a lifting winch with a capacity of 1.000kg, making a complete package. The system has been working excellently on the VOS Start, which is currently chartered by Vestas for the installation of wind turbines for the DONG Walney Extension in the Irish Sea. Personnel and cargo have been transferred continuously, 24/7.

This is truly the future of offshore access, where walking to work is as easy offshore as it is onshore – you wake up, step in the elevator and walk to work.
