INTER-ARRAY CABLE INSTALLATION
FROM THE BEGINNING
FEATURE SPONSOR
SMD’s expertise in cable burial and protection stretches back to 2002, supplying equipment for the first UK commercial scale farm at North Hoyle, a 30 turbine and 60MW project
Fast forward to 2019 and the company is providing innovative solutions for 174 turbine and 1220MW projects like Hornsea Phase 1. This rapid growth is not only present in the UK but reflected across the Global Offshore Wind Market with China on track to build the world’s largest offshore windfarm.
INDUSTRY FOCUS Improving the installation of export and inter-array subsea cables has been an industry focus for a number of years. This is a positive recognition that cables are important, their installation requires care and attention and ‘Right First Time’ is not just a marketing slogan but a requirement for security of transmission and revenue.
It’s now possible and predictable to plan on installing inter-array cables through the winter, in heavy weather and in mixed seabed conditions. Installing four cables a day is possible with investments in vessel and subsea technology and diligence on lean installation processes.
WORKING IN CHALLENGING CONDITIONS SMD have contributed to the industrialisation of building offshore windfarms by introducing technology that works in heavy sea states and trenching tools that perform in the complex mix of seabed conditions around European waters. Installation contractors demand maximum utilisation and capability from their tools without any drop in performance or reliability.
Modular and configurable tools such as SMD’s QT1400 and QT1000 are setting the standard for safe and effective burial. The QT1000 has been hugely successful for Global Marine Group on their latest inter-array cable installation project, a total of 47 dives with 0% downtime at Walney Extension, that’s gold standard performance.
A FLOURISHING AND INNOVATIVE INDUSTRY As an engineering and manufacturing business in the North East, it’s great to see a cluster of subsea expertise and successful businesses in the region contributing to de-carbonising the UK and Europe energy mix and by a crude measure in the UK the company has installed only 20% of the GW pipeline and if we continue to learn lessons and innovate then the industry will flourish.
