MET MASTS

FEATURE SPONSOR

A Convergence of Expertise – a collective noun of two met mast experts!

For this particular feature we have a double whammy of expertise and for this reason I am delighted to welcome to you our joint sponsors of the Met Masts feature - an interesting concept certainly for the purposes of our readers as an example of co-branding and collaboration at its finest

AND INTRODUCING… A MUST FOR MET MASTS! I introduce to you Trond Thorman, Managing Director of Radius Tech and Martin Debnam, Managing Director of 8point8 Group Limited. Both have interesting stories to be told and both have an altostratus of expertise to bestow upon this fascinating industry.

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER Radius Tech enjoy a collaborative and beneficial relationship with 8point8 in the capacity of service partners for the installation of masts and towers. Radius Tech was founded in 1969, (ostensibly a pioneer in the industry, although too modest to mention himself) he has garnered enormous experience which allows him to offer clients the whole solution – from the design stage to assembly, including instrumentation and erection of meteorological towers and communication masts and so in turn meeting the industry’s highest international standards.

8point8 were established in 2010 in Yorkshire by two ultimate professionals whom have built this company from combined expertise

and passion into a multi-faceted venture offering a vast array of services across telecoms, renewables, construction, security and electrical. However for the purposes of this feature we will be predominantly concentrating on their expertise for renewables, again providing a full turnkey solution – both for temporary and permanent meteorological masts both onshore and offshore.

ONSHORE/OFFSHORE There are a myriad of factors to consider be it onshore or offshore such as bearing capabilities on land and of course other convoluted logistics for offshore installations such as sea foundations – they work closely with experts who cater for the marine geological studies and other essential expertise such as jacket foundations.

Trond explains: “In some instances with projects far offshore jack-up

vessels may be required, a feat of engineering in itself – with movable legs, capable of raising its hull over the surface of the sea, in short a massive expenditure, this is where Radius can facilitate the best option logistically and financially for their clients.”

THE TECHNICAL BIT

It is nigh on a science, that is why it is imperative that all the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed. There are geostudies, wave studies and foundation studies. Trond continues: “These essential studies are undertaken to establish: foundation influence of wave pattern wind, fatigue side, nearshore, fatigue calculation. Combining all this data to provide nominal frequency and weight, natural frequency with wave pattern which would therefore change the weight of the tower. This is imperative in ensuring a successful, safe and fruitful project completion.”
