INDUSTRY EXPERTS — CAREERS
ONE OF A KIND… INDUSTRY EXPERT
The company Graham Hacon started in a small office in his home town with just his wife, Leonie – its name inspired by their three young sons – celebrated its 10th anniversary this year
On its birthday, it employed more than 375 people and its brand is stamped on the offshore windfarms across the UK and north Europe.
GROWTH IN RENEWABLES This year, its business swelled to almost 90% renewables, from 50% renewables, 50% oil & gas two years ago. In its first decade, the business has grown so fast that 5% of the estimated figure of all people working in offshore wind in the UK are 3sun Group employees.
The Great Yarmouth-based company is gearing up for a record pipeline of work next year.
Graham, a business leader with nearly 20 years at Managing Director and Chief Executive level, has not only brought business, jobs, skills and training to his home town, he has also brought local content for offshore wind to within sight of his family home this year, a huge achievement.
A 3sun Group team has been at the Siemens Gamesa pre-assembly site for Innogy SE’s Galloper Offshore Windfarm building the 6MW turbine towers at Great Yarmouth Outer Harbour since April.
FROM AN APPRENTICESHIP TO THE BOARD ROOM… Graham’s passion for supporting the skills agenda and launching the 3sun Pre-Apprenticeship Programme in partnership with East Coast College came from his start as an apprentice in the military.
It has also fuelled his position at the forefront of offering new starts and training to ex-services personnel. One of the first in the East of England to sign the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging to employ armed force leavers, his company has put numerous ex-service personnel through wind technician training, following up with employment across the industry.
MILITARY TRAINING Graham’s military training also shaped his commitment to delivering skills and career opportunities for young people in a coastal area still undergoing positive economic development.
Now chair of Offshore Wind Supply Chain Special Interest Group for the East of England Energy Group (EEEGR), aimed at securing a footprint for the East of England’s supply chain, he never envisaged how soon the offshore wind industry would be so important to the growth of his business.
