Waves play a major role during most offshore operations at sea. Unfortunately, sea waves behave in an irregular and unpredictable way

We know that waves occasionally exceed certain operational limits but we do not know when such waves occur. Until now... Next Ocean’s prediction system has changed this: it predicts the actual time traces of waves approaching the ship and the resulting ship motion response - on-board and real time.


COMMON PRACTICE


Common practice is to take a statistical approach to operability: just a very low probability that a limiting wave event occurs is accepted. As a consequence the waves and resulting ship motions are well below the critical value during


INNOVATIVE PREDICTION SYSTEM Next Ocean predicts when and where high waves occur. This enables offshore operators to choose an optimal time window free of high waves for the most critical phase of their operation rather than wait for better conditions or ‘hope’ for the best.


The potential to disrupt the approach to workability limits as we know them today was acknowledged by an expert jury. The Offshore Energy Best Innovation Award 2017 was won by Next Ocean in October 2017.


The main input for the wave prediction system comes from the ship’s navigation radar. An additional dedicated radar antenna is therefore not

required. Using established technology the directional wave spectrum and surface current are derived from the raw radar data. In addition to this technology, Next Ocean has developed new algorithms that provide valuable extra information: real-time prediction of approaching waves and the resulting ship motions minutes in advance.


HOW IT WORKS The interface of the Wave Predictor consists of a traffic light and a timer. The traffic light shows whether or not a situation is ‘workable’.


When the Wave Predictor foresees a workable window it starts to count down till this workable window reaches the ship. As soon as the workable window reached the ship the traffic light jumps to green. The timer starts to count down again, this time till the end of the workable window.


The system is currently undergoing operational tests in the North Sea. The Next Ocean Wave Predictor is targeted for market entry in 2018.
