FEATURE SPONSOR
INTER-ARRAY CABLE INSTALLATION
Building on the global commitment to the environment that continues to grow and the recent successes of offshore wind in the UK CfD auctions, the support to the renewable industry is strengthening.
IMPORTANT ROLE Offshore innovation and technologies play an important role in supporting employment and the energy targets set across the globe as Europe leads the way. As the number of offshore windfarms and associated technologies grow, so does the requirement for a flexible approach, encompassing and adapting to the changing needs of the sector. In welcoming recent developments, we as an industry must accept the need to update and adapt our equipment, vessels, people, skills and approach to meet the new challenges of this industry.
In order to meet the increasing offshore demands, there is increased pressure on the vessels, equipment and personnel. As windfarms move further offshore and the voltage supply of the Inter Array Cable is increased to 66kv, the industry is challenged to keep up with the pace of change and provide an environment that allows for further evolution of existing equipment and methodology of the installation and support, combined with the offshore environmental challenges.
CHALLENGES
As the sector rallies to match the developments, there are a number of challenges that have emerged, notably increased response time, upgrading of equipment and additional training
for personnel, whilst the maintenance of such systems has a better understanding and risk profile. New solutions are required to ensure the industry is prepared.
Furthermore, projects that are moving further offshore, such as the Galloper and East Anglia bring additional challenges such as the number of skilled personnel and additional facilities such as offshore accommodation required due to the extended timing of the projects.
DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH Assessing the way that the industry is progressing, for example with the introduction of floating windfarms that require higher and more flexible voltage cables, it is expected that the technology and approach will continue to develop and grow. As experienced independent offshore facilitators, OMM are adapting to these changes by remaining flexible and innovative with their approach to projects and are able to efficiently assess what tools and techniques will be required in order to achieve the project outcomes.
PERSONNEL, TRAINING AND SKILLS In being prepared for the next step, they are able to respond efficiently to the calls of a project and enable the industry to continue to move forward. The personnel aspect of the company, Offshore Marine People and Academy (OMPA), are responsible for training individuals and companies in order to ensure they have the skills to respond to the requirements of the project, the longevity of the campaign and the changing aspect of the industry. OMPA has a knowledge development
programme on offer for individuals and companies that want to improve their skill set in this challenging environment.
At OMM, the approach is to ensure they are as independent, responsive and flexible as possible in their approach and design of projects, ensuring that they are prepared and open to creating innovative solutions that work for clients. They create bespoke plans utilising long- established industry partnerships and specialised equipment providers to allow them to meet the specific and individual needs of clients and their offshore projects.
COLLABORATION Through collaboration with key partners, the company is able to support the requirements of sophisticated and complex projects. The emphasis is to ‘Analyse, Design and Deliver’ an engineered solution which is tailored to each project. This enables them to provide value added engineering with a safe, cost effective and time efficient project delivery.
EXPERIENCE OMM’s experience in providing tailored engineering solutions to over 400 offshore projects since 2003 provides them with an in-depth knowledge of the sector and the direction that it is heading.
The company welcomes the positive changes and developments and looks forward to overcoming the challenges beyond 2020.
